Milton Friedman on the Prohibition of Drugs part 1 of 3

Very good interview.

Though in part one he seems to miss an important aspect of regulation of drugs. You could tax drugs like you do cigarettes. First this would bring in enormous amount of revenue which could be spent on drug education, prevention and care and rehabilitation of addicts.
Furthermore one could tax drugs to make the more dangerous drugs more expensive than safer drugs and make it economically favorable to take the less dangerous drugs.
Thirdly with drugs being legal, pharmaceutical companies could come up with new regulated drugs that are safer and less addictive.

Also might I suggest you make a playlist for those other two parts and post it as one sift instead of three separate sifts. This is actually also *long because it's one interview that's over 10 minutes.

So your idea is to impose on people's freedoms by fining them for what they choose to do with their own body, then squander the stolen money on propaganda and absolving adults of responsibility for their actions.

I hate the 'legalise it then tax it' crowd. Legalise it, execute all the people responsible for criminalising it, then shut the fuck up about it.

I happen to think regulation would be better than all out legalization. Would you think it's okay to sell alcohol to minors? No? well that's also regulation.
Also I think the taxes are necessary to offset any burdens that might develop for society from drug use. So using the money to provide help and (health)care for the addicted so they don't cause too much problems for their environment. Using money for education so people can make educated choices.

Putting excise duties on drugs to only discourage their use like on cigarettes might indeed oppose people's freedom of choice and I haven't really made up my stance for or against it.
