Winstonfield_Pennypackersays...This reminds me of the neolibs in the 90s when they said Republicans were trying to "starve children" by cutting the department of education budget. For a second here let's take off the party blinders and look at this phenomenon. There is a kernal of truth in these kinds of arguments, but only a kernal... For example...
The VA document does encourage veterans to consider instigating 'end of life' discussions with doctors (often for perfectly valid reasons). This may result in a greater number who decide to end treatment & use hospice. It may not be a HUGE number or anything, but it'll happen. Likewise - if you cut DOE funding there may be some kids who might eat less frequently or lavishly. It wouldn't be a lot of people, but there would be some.
In both cases, acceptable common-sense results get extrapolated out to ridiculous levels sheerly for the purpose of politically smearing a target. I don't believe VA doctors would turn into 'death panels'. It was patently absurd to claim children would 'starve'. And yet both parties use these tactics to convince the public that these ad absurdum exaggerations are the reality, when in fact they are just plain silly.
The rub lies in the fact that party loyalist zombies don't care jackdiddlysquatdoodle when 'thier team' is the one doing this kind of crap. Neolibs don't like it when the Republicans start talking about 'death panels'? OK - fine. But where is your outrage over the exaggerations on the neolib side of this debate? Why no comments about Obama's outlandish claims that the 'plan' (which he hasn't defined) would save money? How about the exaggerations that the protests are all ginned up by insurance companies and right-wing kooks? What about the lies that protesters are all swatztika wearing, brownshirted nazis?
Basically, if your outrage isn't CONSISTENT then it isn't VALID. If you can't roundly condemn the behavior from both sides then you're not a whistle-blower... You're a tool.
Nithernsays...Michael Steele showing the world he isnt educated? Again? He's worst then Lassie having to pull Billie out of quicksand for the 84th time in a row.
I have to disagree with Mr. W. Pennypacker above. Mr. Steele has yet to voice things that sound like someone who is educated, intelligent, or wise. In fact, I am led to believe his only qualification to being in the role he is in now, is...he's black. Which is a rather sad requirement for the position. There's plenty of very educated, intelligent and wise men that are black in our country.....like Mr. Obama.
Maybe Mr. Steele can point out the exact text in the VA manual that tells patients to commite suicide. Frankly this by itself is appalling. Mr. Steele seems to treat the concept of suicide as a petty arguement. I've known people that have committed suicide, AND, where in the military. There is no text in the VA manual that says this. To bad Mr. Steele isn't man enough to admit this lie for what it is, and ask for forgiviness from others.
amburglarsays...Funny. So today I talked to my dad - who happens to be a viet nam vet with depression and dementia- and he was yelling and crying about how his government wants him to kill himself. He couldn't remember where he heard/read it and spent half of our phone conversation shuffling through medicare statements trying to find the evidence. I consoled him and told him that surely he had misheard or misread something. And then I got home and saw this.
This isn't the first time. I am so sick of this. There is NO accountability for the media. It makes me want to scream.
shveddysays...CLICKY
For anyone who wants to read what it actually says (and find out that Winstonfield_Pennypacker pretty much go it spot on).
Winstonfield_Pennypackersays...Was there any doubt? Anyway, pay particular attention to the ever-so-helpful little quiz they compassionately titled, "What makes life worth living?" Now - keep in mind this is a government document.
Nithernsays...So Shveddy,
You took something that has nothing to do with the VA hospital, and tried to pass it off, as being offical documents of the VA. Do you take people for fools so often?
Yes, the site talks about end of life in a mature manner. It does NOT say, you plan out a suicide. Consult an actual therapist on Depression on the difference between 'end of life treatment' and 'suicide'. You'll get a deep education on the subject matter. Mr. Pennypacker's foolishness still stands for what it is.
Mr. Pennypacker,
Where exactly, does this document explain its a goverment document? Which page? Since the address comes from Google. Last I checked, my goverment is The United States of American, NOT, Google, Inc. Maybe you could supply me with the actual goverment site (i.e. has the fun little '.gov' on the end) In addition, what sort of person makes a cheap shot at a serious topic like 'end of life'? Those without humanity in them.
