Eddie Van Halen played the guitar solo as a favor for Quincy Jones and was not paid.

Jackson wrote came up with the song when his producer, Quincy Jones, encouraged him to write something like "My Sharona," which was a huge hit for The Knack in 1979.

Michael Jackson is quoted in Rolling Stone magazine's Top 500 songs issue as saying of this, "I wanted to write the type of rock song that I would go out and buy, but also something totally different from the rock music I was hearing on Top 40 radio."

When Jackson reunited with his brothers for 2 shows at Madison Square Garden, Slash from Guns N' Roses played guitar during the performance of this and "Black And White."
