Matthews Carves Up John Feehery

The fun really starts around 2:30.

what's the bodylanguage interpretation of fumbling your words, hesitating, and scratching your face while you say something? Obama looked pretty uncomfortable when he used that line.

matthews said first this was frivolous, and then spent time getting passionate about the details of it.
halfway through he even said "this is an very important issue"
he talks over everyone with a predecided attack angle.

it doesn't matter if maccain said it ages ago. saying it just after your opponent nominates a woman who says a soundbite about lipstick... is inadvisable.

Poor show, Matthews.

Lol, poor show Matthews ? I think his litany of dates/times/names of the usage and the whole BOOK were to drive home the point of how ubiquitous the phrase is.

The fact is you and I and everyone else knows this is phony outrage. It's a stretch at best. And the commentator saying ' You gotta be careful what you say in this election' is just perpetuating this cycle of 'gotcha' politics. And if confronted, I guarantee he would bad-mouth the media for playing this game, all the while his campaign is banking on it.

It's just Republicans running on pure hypocrisy; Democrats may be equally bad, but at least they're not so painfully obvious about it.

You can put lipstick on a pig, but you can't make him drink. What did John McCain mean when he said this in a recent press interview? While the press debates, the true meaning stands out -- John McCain is accusing Joe Biden of being a filthy drunk. Do you want John McCain as your President? No.

So basically it looks like the McCain camp didn't do their homework. Oops! Egg on whose face? Either that or simple case of double-standard... by the party that chooses candidates for the strongest seats in the world based on gender. Desperate much?

I'd vote for this 100 times if I could.

Mink, if a manufactured outrage is being widely covered by the media, Matthews has a duty to both point out it's frivolous and to refute it.

The reason he plays hardball with his guests is because they come on the show having rehearsed a dozen times the lies and spin they're going to try to pollute the audience's minds with.

Razorsays...

Matthews did the write thing by driving the point home with good research to back it up; the book was just the icing-on-the-cake. Upvote. McCain's campaign of smears is incredibly lame. I don't think there is a chance of hell of this election returning to the issues.

MINKsays...

if he would shut up for 5 seconds and stop repeating his points, his guests would destroy themselves with their own words.

by cutting in and making it obvious that he doesn't want a discussion, he weakens the force of his argument.

i wish he spent his time asking about something important, don't you?

Matthews IS the frikkin media. I can't stand it when the media sit around reporting on what the media is doing, and i can't stand it when people defend them for that. it's metanews. it's a waste of time. fuck this "angertainment".

It seems like you're arguing that political figures should be allowed to weave whatever lies they want in the media, and nobody can call them on it because that would be "metanews."

We can't stand idly by while charlatan policians successfully make an election be about non-issues.

^ You both make good points -- the media never should have whipped up a storm over the "lipstick on a pig" just because the McCain campaign waved the red flag "sexism".

That said, once the storm was whipped up, I think Matthews is doing the right thing by spending a whole hour (yes, the whole hour was about this), basically beating the tar out of anyone who a) thought this was real or b) thought this was important.

Hardball is almost always a "metanews" kind of show, so this was definitely the right forum for this kind of a beatdown, IMO.

He did spend a bit too much time doing an O'Reilly-style rant, but I think someone needs to be showing how ridiculous the whole thing is, and tweety did a hilarious job of it here.

That was pretty good. The only thing I would've enjoyed more is if Chris Matthews bent that fucker over and literally ripped him a new asshole as well.

Disingenuous, lying, sleezeball, cowardly, worthless motherfucking scumbags. It's telling that those are the kind of people McCain has on his payroll.
