Officials in Medicine Hat declared a state of emergency on Saturday after the South Saskatchewan River and several tributaries burst their banks, flooding parts of the city and the outlying area of Cypress County.

The small town of Maple Creek, Sask., with a population of 2,600, was also hard hit by flooding, according to media reports.
