Mac Vs PC: Vista Dowgrade

I am a full on PC person and have to give Apple a big thumbs up on this commercial for hitting the nail on the head.
Grimmsays...

I agree that the "Hi I'm a MAC and I'm a PC" commercials can sometimes be very smug and take some cheap shots. But I find this to be one of the few exceptions...could have just as easily been made by any PC fan since there is not just a grain of truth here but a lot of it. *requeue

They can't stop because for the most part they are trying to appeal to a different kind of user - the kind that actually knows how to use a computer (no offense to those with a mac intended). Macs are generally built around ease of use - for those that don't use computers or are too afraid to use them. Sometimes though, they hit it on the head. I will NEVER have a Mac, but this commercial is spot on.

^ Disagree with that statement MG. Although Macs are easier to use- I find them much more powerful and versatile for the productive, expert users.

People talk about "intuitiveness" and "look and feel" but what it means when you get those things right- is that you can get more of whatever your work is done in less time. Macs are pretty, shiny, lickable- but they are also damn useful machines.

I work in IT- and I know many more Mac users who are hardcore developers and DBAs than Windows users. The Windows users tend to be the Office jockeys, content to fiddle with PowerPoint and Excel.

Of course this is just my totally subjective opinion.

I'm not here to start a Mac vs PC war, just provide some balance. I find this ad a tad... ironic, given some of the problems Apple's newest OS, Leopard, is having. Mac is a relatively closed platform compared to the PC world, and they're having problems on install, problems with their own hardware, blue screens of death, security... And yes, MS has it's own problems, but Leopard's launch has hardly gone smoothly or been an example on how it's done.

Is Apple's Leopard still in beta?

There are many reasons to use a mac, but Vista isn't one of them.

OMFG, dag there have been so many times I've wanted to through Macs out Windows (no pun intended), that I considered it a safety hazard that the original iMac had a convenient "grab and throw off roof" handle.

Vista's actually working quite nicely. Then again, any computer where I exercise absolute control will generally work quite nicely. As opposed to, say, my work system (running XP), which has to run work-related utilities. Although I can't complain about its performance as of late, except for the monthly update program which delivers new accounting guidlines to me with all the grace and finesse of a drunken Heavy in TF2.

Speaking of which, I want to play some TF2 now.

Having recently upgraded to Vista I must say that I'm pretty indifferent to it. On the one hand I like the UI a lot more now, on the other it has some annoying network issues that I haven't been able to sort out properly. It hasn't made any difference. I can't be bothered to downgrade because overall I'd have the same level of satisfaction but with the niggly bits that don't work in different places.

Well, I'm on my Mac about 12 hours a day- for the last 2 years. In that time, it's crashed twice due to some kind of kernel panic. I'm pretty happy with that considering how I torture it.

I've never felt the urge to chuck it out the window- can't say the same about wrestling with XP on jobs I've been on.

It's just all the crappy little things that add up to a frustrating experience.

Things like: auto-selecting words in all applications. Where do I turn this off? why in Word. But it only stays off for a few sessions than magically starts doing it again.

Who the hell thought of that animated dog for their search window? How about putting a Find and replace option in Notepad instead- would it kill them? (fixed in Vista, I know - but this was years. I guess all the development time went into the dog - and clippy).

I love the procedure for mapping a network drive. let's see ummm, back-slash, back-slash er... what was the name of that box again?

Don't get me started on installing a network printer.

installed leopard, had to hard reset first time it booted up (grey screen of death), now capturing video from my video camera doesn't work.

Well, to be honest - the only reason I don't use a mac is because they just aren't meant for your DIYer/gamer. I looked at their power macs, and unless I missed something, the only way to get any serious power is to pay 4-5,000 dollars - and that's not even considering that you can't play games on them anyway. If I was an average "internet only" user, I'd go mac. But it just doesn't work for a gamer - especially one that likes to build his own.

You are right MG, Macs are not gaming machines- that might be the real reason for most of the increases in productivity that I have on my MacBook.

I have one of the little white MacBooks- and I think they have plenty a grunt for what they are good at. The current Specs:

* 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
* 1GB memory
* 120GB hard drive
* Double-layer burner

Are not bad for a $1300 laptop.

I think that if Apple managed to change their OS so that the current games were compatible - and of course open up their hardware line/make it compatible with off-the-shelf components - they would put Microsoft out of business.

MG: apple opening up their architecture was a disaster, and they canceled all the licenses when they expired because the machines sucked, and it reflected badly on apple.

MS manages to get their software working on machines that suck, but it takes them forever, costs them a bundle, and often requires that they don't do what they think they should do because the machines won't be able to handle it consistently.

Apple learned how much of a pain that is, decided to stick with higher end hardware and keep control of the hardware. That has worked to their benefit because they can make the machines good enough to do what they think they should do with the software.

Since I'm a member of the third political party in this all I can say is my friends don't ask me to help fix their macs, they do ask me to help fix their MS systems. I really don't like to deal with either of them.

The PC users that are defending Windows against MAC are missing the point here. Even though this is a "MAC vs PC" commercial it's really addressing "Vista vs XP" which is valid concern for many PC users these days. The way things are now I recommend to all my customers to stick with XP (don't upgrade) and if they are buying a new system to get one with XP installed on it. Mainly because all the hardware and software they are using is optimized to work with XP. That should change over time so that in a few years Vista "should" have the advantage...but why put up with a slower machine now in the meantime?

Some of the latest tests show that "Windows XP trounced Windows Vista in all tests -- regardless of the versions used or the amount of memory running on the computer. In fact, XP proved to be roughly twice as fast as Vista in most of the tests."
