National Geographic: The Phoenix lander is sent to Mars to search the arctic plains to find water.

the reasons for doing these things are very suspicious.
i think it far more likely that it's a stage in getting american men on mars, laying claim to it. need to know exactly what there is there first, saves money in the long run.
