I've never seen the movie, but the book was ABSOLUTELY amazing. I don't think I've ever wished for any other book of that size to be longer.

I couple of years ago, I read through the whole series, but the last one (Chapterhouse Dune) almost killed me, because it had a completely different and much more political theme. The first book was very good as a sort of innocent story like the first Star Wars or Matrix, it opened up the universe. I think my favorite book, however, is God Emperor of Dune (the fourth).

Also, since Frank Herbert's passing his son Brian Herbert and co-author Kevin Anderson have taken over and started producing his lost works by compiling notes his father had. Combined they've manged to pump out another 10 or so novels, typically all themed around the various factions within the Dune universe.
