Joe Pantoliano on the rise and fall of the Matrix movies

I don't agree. The kung-fu and special effects were an important and exciting part of the Matrix. But the ideas, the plot, and the virtual setting were also very engaging. The plot and believability took a big nosedive in the second and especially third part of the trilogy.

Yes all the action and special effects in the sequels are great. I think it would have been better not to try and do a cliffhanger like they did, and make the two sequels as one movie instead. Take out all the limbo subway bullshit, Morpheus' speechifying, vampires and werewolves, etc. and just give us the story of how Neo delivers salvation to Zion in 120 minutes. Then you're free to make a third movie that can actually answer some questions as to what's really going on.

The machines always seemed pretty benevolent to me. I think it'd have been more interesting to reveal that the history is wrong, and somehow we were put into the matrix for our own good. I think it's important that the "blue world" be real and not just another layer of simulation. Blah blah I have written thousands of words about this over the years because the first movie is such a classic.

I read somewhere that the matrix was supposed to be three parts but the second movie was split into two because there was too much to fit in... so we're still waiting for part three.

I thought all 3 were phenomenal. Except for the Zion rave scene.

That's strange. I was always under the assumption that The Matrix was supposed to be one movie. And that two and three were only thought up (badly) after the huge success of the first one.

budzos, that does seem like a good way to have made II and III. You must have seen Animatrix which does delve into the history between man and machine somewhat and is also much better than Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions.

Oh I have seen Animatrix many times. I think it's great but I also think a lot of the history in "The Second Renaissance" is mis- or dis-information.
