Infinitely Variable Gearbox For Bikes

Video of student Derek Lahr describing in detail and showing off his infinitely variable transmission for bicycles. Awarded best in show invention at World Interbike Convention in Las Vegas October 2007. (Thanks Digg)

An infinitely variable gearbox is something that bikes have been needing in, like, always. But I've just gotta believe that there must be a simpler way to make it work than this. Obviously a huge amount of thought and effort went into designing this device, but talk about over-engineering! There are so many moving parts in there that it's hard to imagine the thing surviving a whole Tour de France.

On the plus side, now that it's been done, others will find easier and more robust ways to do it with a simpler design.

This is a really cool idea, but i think it would be better suited to dirtbikes or motorcycles where you can afford the extra weight rather than mountain bikes. And that is a lot of moving parts, so durabillity is going to be a huge issue. And also, comming from experience, a chain with that little play in it is going to be a bitch to fix if it ever breaks mid ride.

that doesn't look very good, the only thing i can picture is alot of vibration at higher speeds. any mechanical engineer should know about continuously variable belt and traction drives, not quite infinitely variable, but it does the job alright.

i would post some links but i couldnt find any
