Easter Islanders depended on trees for both source of energy as well as raw materials for building boats. They were highly dependent on trade with other islands, so boats were vital to the trade. But people needed housing and heat, so they kept cutting trees down, until non was left. When the last tree was consumed, they had no means of building boats and trading with other islands. The islands were not self sustaining, so the people turned to cannibalism until the civilization was wiped away.
