In Movies, Why is There a Dial Tone After Someone Hangs Up?

The original title had old movies, but fuck that, a movie from 2004 is not an 'old' movie.

Wow, I never knew that!

Fascinating.

You know at first I thought the "girl" was just the author dressed in drag.

It is different in Australia, or at least where I am. You get a dial tone when you pick up the phone initially, but you get a different sound when the call has been terminated.

Honestly, it might be nice sometimes to have a disconnection tone, rather than get through half a description before realizing the other party dropped their call.
