I've found by clapping your hands above them you can usually get a kill. Ofcourse, this method shouldn't be performed before eating

I walk up behind them with a simple plastic knife, pull back one end so it has tension, then release it to the side of the fly. A kill almost every time, and no mess.

I like to use a vacuum cleaner's wand attachment. Takes more work, but there's no mess. If you have multiple insects it can be much quicker.

hm, i thought it was because they could sense the air compression caused by the swatter, which is why swatters have holes.

Wish someone would pay me millions to do this kind of in-valuable research.

I always catch em with my hands and take them outside of the house. I literally cant hurt a fly.
Approaching from the rear doesnt let me catch em so easily. I found that getting em right from the front gives me almost a 100% chance to catch em.
