Very cute trick, but I very much question its usefulness in survival. Because I'm gonna be carrying around my cell-phone and a freaking BRILLO PAD before I carry around a lighter, or a matchbox, or some flint and steel? Not freaking likely. Still, might be good at parties.

I already knew this, if you dont want to risk burning expensive phone batteries, it also works with most batteries(standard 9 volt batteries are just as good), but as Lithic points out, who the fuck carries around steel wool instead of matches

Pffft. I've got a better way. All you need is a piece of string, some wire hangers, a battery, a 16h century painting, some tinder and matches.
