How i accidently created a hoax

From Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/canberra/comments/405f8a/an_apology_from_an_idiot/

Last week i uploaded a video here that depicted a large ball of light in the sky exploding into a doughnut. I didn't intend for it to be taken seriously, but i made an error in judgement and titled the video as if it was real. Because of this the video went viral. It was reported on by the abc & canberratimes among many others. It was even in the paper.
What happened is 2 days prior to uploading the video, i bought after effects. I wanted to learn how to do video editing and whatnot. I use photoshop on a daily basis, so i'm not new to the process of image editing. The worst thing to come out of this is that i caused Canberra astronomer, Dr Brad Tucker and Senior forecaster at the Bureau of Meteorology Sean Carson to take time out of their day to talk about the video. I'm extremely sorry for that. I messed up bad.
During the week the video has been live i have refused to say anything about it or respond to the many journalists trying to get in contact with me. I honestly didn't know how to respond. I also did not license or monitise the video. I have posted a second video explaining how the first video was made.
Once again, i did not mean for this to happen. I just hoped it would get a few laughs. I'm sorry if this has caused any grievances.

Well, you can somehow edit a video and release it for laughs, and get astounded that so many people get fooled by it, I can actually believe that.

For me it falls apart here:
"During the week the video has been live i have refused to say anything about it or respond to the many journalists trying to get in contact with me. I honestly didn't know how to respond."
Glad he figured out what to do at the end.

But I say he went the wrong way about it. What he should have done is: Call up the Jimmy Kimmel people, and make it become their stunt!

People are stupid and want to be fooled so why would anyone apologize. Employing critical thinking is like fighting gravity, most people take the elevator rather than climb the stairs.

Assuming this is true, he probably did it to diffuse the misunderstanding. Maybe even specifically out of irritation at how stupid and easily fooled people are. At least irritation with others would have been my motivation in this scenario.

Explanation video is fake, made by the FBI to throw you off the scent...

But seriously, it shows how easily some people will see what they want to believe. In this instance the creator came forward and 'fessed up, but in how many other cases has this not happened and the footage remains "credible"?
