I actually just read in A.J. Jacobs "Guinea Pig Diaries" that multi-tasking is bad for your brain. I can't remember the specifics and I'm too lazy to go get the book but, interesting notion.

Most athletes multitask, on a large scale level.

There is the subconscious brain and the conscious brain. The athlete above is doing this in the subconscious way. He probably isn't even thinking about riding the bike.

The brain is built to be concurrent in certain ways.
