I have been so excited for this ever since seeing the pilot. Ricky Gervais says it's his favourite thing he's ever written and you can tell why. it's all about the heartmelt and hilarity.

And before anyone says "Karl Pilkington is shit, he's playing himself", that was Ricky's intention, he wrote the character around him.

PS LOVED him in the original Office.

You are definitely not alone there. I found him brilliant, but it'd be impossible to watch it you found him unconvincing. What a shame!

I got onto a Ricky Gervais kick about 2 years ago. Watched The Office, Extras, listened to all his XFM broadcasts, his audiobooks, Guide To's, watched An Idiot Abroad, etc.. The problem I have with seeing him play Derek is due to the face he makes; I've seen him do that face too many times in other media (Extras as Mr. Stokes for example) so I keep expecting him to break character at any moment with that trademark laugh of his. It's so disconcerting that I have trouble suspending my expectation of it, so that I can actually see and enjoy the character.

I'll watch the show and I'm sure it will be a hit. But I don't think I'll be able to enjoy as much as someone who's new to him.

Oh I'll definitely give it a try - I think it may have been just the fact that I've seen him in other things and I'm filtering his performance through that lens. could just take a bit of time to see him as this new character...
