In summary, geeks were obsessed with her thinking that she's a "real girl", some started to track things down after finding the production values suspciously good, and found out it's a plot to make a movie or something.

The woman who plays Lonelygirl15 on the video-sharing site YouTube.com has been identified as Jessica Rose, a twentyish resident of New Zealand and Los Angeles and a graduate of the New York Film Academy. And the whole project appeared to be the early, serialized version of what eventually would become a movie.

Matt Foremski, the 18-year-old son of Tom Foremski, a reporter for the blog Silicon Valley Watcher, was the first to disinter a trove of photographs of the familiar-looking actress, who portrayed the character named Bree in the videos. The episodes suggested Bree was the home-schooled daughter of strictly religious parents who improbably stole time to upload video blogs of her innermost thoughts.

The discovery and the swift and subsequent revelation of other details surrounding the perpetrators of the videos - and the phony fan site that accompanied it - end one of the Internet's more elaborately constructed mysteries.

Fans' disbelief in Lonelygirl15 was not willingly suspended, but rather teased and toyed with. Whether they will embrace the project as a new narrative form, condemn it, or simply walk away remains to be seen.

On learning that Rose was an actress whose interests, unlike the scientific and religious issues that fascinated Bree, ran to parties and posing, one fan wrote, "I'm heart-broken." The fan added, "But a wonderful actress, had me fooled into thinking she was a geek like me."

So, a media company hires actress and actor to post YouTube and myspace pages to get millions of views and become a major viral campaign, and now you want to infect VS with this corporate BS!

I'm getting really sick of ads, and this viral crap. they sue people on the one hand for their shows being popular online, and on the other hand invest millions to push their crap on to computer monitors.

Well no joedirt, I don't care whether or not the vid makes it out of queue without a bullet to the head, I posted this primarily for discussion, including comments such as yours.

It's a sort of "social commentary" posting - hence my initial comment about not particularly caring for the vid.

I didn't really know about the whole phenom thing until a few days ago when I read a similar article. I saw one of those videos a couple weeks back where she goes swimming, but I thought the stark black bathingsuit she was wearing seemed really out of place, but then just the name "Lonelygirl15" kinda jumped at me just because it seemed so blantently generic and you'd think on a site such as YouTube a name like that would have been taken up very quickly. So, suspicions all around.

But if this is just a product of a talent agency, it could be a good way to get a lot of publicity if they play their cards right and don't over play it.

They overplayed it.

They failed in this viral campaign. Simply because of technicality and logic.

First the character is portrayed as a young innocent home schooled girls who loves PCs and a geeky guy. Talk about hitting your target audience huh?

Second, her video quality and lighting is beyond the capabilty of a webcamera. She stated that her friend edits her videos, the guy name david with who she is trying to go steady with. They record a video of themselves fighting something no girl would do, and no guy would edit to put together even though she makes disparaging remarks about him.

Third, it's a standard script line, girl likes boy, father is strict about family and letting her go out with him. Yet somehow he allows this 18 year old hang out all alone with his 16 year old daughter at their house. Realism = Dead.

As a viral campaign this is just poor, and easy to see through. The fact that so many people bought into this means that world domination of the masses is still possible.

This is going to be turned into a movie that comes out on 10/12/06....
