Epic Battle Scene from War and Peace

Sergei Bondarchuk's 1968 film War and Peace took seven years to shoot, at a cost of over $100 million (with inflation taken into account it would cost over $700 million today, making it the most expensive film ever made). This scene depicting the Battle of Borodino, the defining battle of Napoleon's invasion of Russia was filmed without CGI and with 120,000 extras!

Wow, I haven't had the pleasure of seeing this movie. Def on the rent list now! There is something very tragically satisfying about the organic feel of the death displayed in this. The spiraling smoke and general mayhem make it truly seem like a hell of hells.

The original Soviet version of this film was split into 4 parts and totaled 484 minutes (8 hours!) though later versions were shortened. It won the 1969 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and the Golden Globe in the same category
