Drama kitty practicing for Halloween

iwannasays...

Ummm.... actually that's my cat, ladybug, and I would never hurt her. Sigh. That's why the title is Drama Kitty. Should've figured that somebody would mistinterpret. Perhaps I'll take it down.

Are you self-linking?

See posting guidelines.

http://www.videosift.com/faq-en.php#posting_guidelines

1. Please don't self link. While you may see this site as a great way to promote a project you are working on, it would be bad for our content if everyone just put up videos of them and their friends doing random things. If you think that the project you've put together is truly amazing and we must see it, please email us. We'll take a look at it and if we think it's really great too, we'll add it for you. If you skip this step your account will be deleted. Hey it's harsh, but it's harsh love.

maudlinsays...

iwanna, if that's your own video, you can't submit it. It's in the FAQ.

But for the record, I have a grey tabby who complains and quacks like a duck when she gets petted, or gets to go outside, even though she loves both experiences. And I have a brown Burmese who likes being gently but firmly spanked, slapped and rolled around, all the while purring like mad. So I think the odd noises your cat made may not necessarily have been a sign that it was really aggravated.

(Well, except for the hissing at the end. She sounded pissed then. *g*)

iwannasays...

Sorry folks... had no idea that you couldn't take a video and post it on your favorite site. Sigh. Just having fun. And trust me, the hiss was all drama, that's just how she plays. She's a little weird, ahem, like most cats are in their own special way.

i knew i should have followed the youtube link! *discard (dead link)

iwanna ... i never said that you hurt your cat, but my personal opinion (being a cat aficionado) is: your cat was aggravated ... hence, her posturing and hiss towards the end.

in the end, i don't know you or your feline, which is why the above will forever remain: my opinion.

Please don't take the comments personally, iwanna, and understand that self-linking is disallowed for more reasons than to simply prevent people from spamming/advertising/self-promotion. Basically, this blanket rule exists in part because if you made the video yourself, you are very quite certain to find it entertaining, but such subjective an opinion is likely not a great enough measure of a video's true quality.

Please don't allow other member comments or down-votes to bother you personally. All Sifters (especially long-term ones like LadyBug) tend to be quite frank (especially when they aren't aware it's your video), but are great people. I hope you continue sifting with us, especially since you've been with us for going on 6 months now.

iwannasays...

Uhhhhhhh... isn't that why you are able to delete a video? Look at the INTENTION, not the result. Lighten up. It makes me wonder how many entertaining videos at videosift are "cast out" when they are something that would be enjoyable to the public. Rules should always be reviewed to see if they stand up to the common opinion of the audience, not the rulemakers. Isn't that what democracy is about? Now, I know you just went, "psh-shaw", but that is the INTENT of common rule, not the way it is. Shouldn't that be what the internet is about?

James Roesays...

The self link policy is actually pretty popular with most of the long term sifters. It is a well understood rule and one that we adopted from metafilter. It is something that has given us much leeway in dealing with "astroturfing" in the past. I can understand why it might have upset you as it can be harsh to have anyone come down on things that you have spent time and effort on, however this policy is by necessity a sort of all or nothing type system. I wish you had left the video on youtube though, I wanted to see it.

iwannasays...

Was there anything self-promoting about that youtube link? I ask that as I re-string my blinds because I RENT a house and will get ding-ed on the deposit because one of my cats (the black one in the video, if you're wondering) chewed off the means to OPEN the blinds... I have been on BOTH sides of an internet board, the rulemaker trying to quash the people who are using the internet for their own personal gain... and as the internet surfer trying to find entertainment outside of the bloated and nonsensical media. I think there is a happy medium and it involves human intervention... aka the ability to delete... to keep the bad guys out. Why did I get squashed with a rule, instead of ruled with a human touch? I remember the days when I thought rule was better... but now I believe that human touch is necessary. Otherwise we are all just computers. What a shame.

Again, it doesn't have to be self-promotion. I suppose spelling it out for you would be in order since you aren't picking up what we're putting down. It would not be sensible for us to have a rule saying "You cannot post your own videos if they are self-promoting, but if you happen to like one of your own non-self-promoting videos (which I'm sure rarely happens because most people hate their own videos), you can post it, but you will have to announce that it is your video so we know to check it to see if it really isn't self-promotion."

We would be inundated and do not have the staff or time to sit around being judge, jury, and executioner for all of the countless self-links that would surely result, so the blanket rule exists. Without it, every member who has ever made a video or ever will would sit and post video after video of their own work hoping it would be published because they're sure the world would love their work just as much as they do. Besides, if we only allowed some self-links to be posted, how and who would make the decision for each whether it should stay or if maybe it's self-promotion? What if people start posting home video-looking videos that have a spam-like watermark in the corner of every one? How could we possibly know the "INTENT" of the poster? Would we then say everyone can post a self-link except for him, her, and the other guy because their self-links might possibly be self-promoting?

I think there is a happy medium and it involves human intervention... aka the ability to delete... to keep the bad guys out.
To reiterate (all over again), making subjective opinions is rather impossible because it is simply infeasible to determine the source and reasons for posting, let alone be the judge of every video by the poster's intent, so we must resort to being objective with one ring to rule them all. You make it all sound very easy and simplistic, but I assure you, it is much easier in black and white than gray all over.

Pardon the longwindedness, but it seems rather difficult to make the logic behind the posting guidelines apparent for some reason.

iwannasays...

If we let the rules make the decisions, like computers would, then we would *ALL* be bad guys. Intent is the key. I can't tell you enough that this is where I believe humanity is failing. I work in the service of the public. If I judge people's decisions on mere results, without considering the big picture, I would not have a job. Otherwise, a computer could do it for me. But I hear the tone of voice, the reasons for actions, the morality of the people who have had the guts to say that they need help, or the sense that they are not trying to break the rules, they just don't know the rules and the rules aren't very intuitive. I give them a break, I don't chastise them for breaking the rules the first time. I will pay the price of having my account deleted, if that is what the owner of the site is intending by the rules. For the record, I just wanted to post a video that was entertaining to cat lovers, who have cats that are DRAMATIC and can love them even though they appear to be aggravated.
