Derrick Jensen - Modern Day Slavery

These concepts used to really trouble me as a kid. The idea that you are not allowed to just go into the woods and live off the land. No matter where you go, someone thinks they own it and will eventually use violence to remove you or exact money for use of the land. So we're born slaves in a sense, and the only real way for a normal person to escape the slavery is to exploit the system. Meaning there is no going around the system. You can go through it in a sense, but in any case, you are in the system.

Signing a lease on a new rental property last month, I started to feel really down, when towards the end of the signing process, the realtor explained her agency's policy in the event of us failing to pay our rent on time. There were several steps to the process, each one becoming increasingly persistent and forceful.

Afterward, I thought to myself how silly I was in feeling depressed, it was only a policy afterall and there was only a small chance that it would ever affect us.

Now I realise I was probably more in tune with the depressing reality of the violence underpinning our system than I would give myself credit for. This video has illuminated it clearly.

Roll with the paradigm, nothing is static, we are constantly adjusting-"Trapped in a world you never made"...only works if you don't recognize the hallucination he refers to there at the end-We are experiencing what we are now in the world, because we created it-

His entire concept is extremely naive. I'm sure he doesn't own that nice coat he's weating either, the receipt in his pocket is what he owns and everyone agrees that he owns that coat... what's the point exactly? If I understand his insinuation, we should disregard ownership of material objects including real estate. I'm sure he'd be quite happy if someone built a big fence around the property his mother doesn't own and forbid him from coming in, getting high, and talking to the camera. But no that can't happen, there are rules preventing this from happening, right? Only if you 'buy' into the system.

He's a fucking moron and should live with Charlie in The Chocolate Factory. Good luck in making reality a free-for-all. Another example of "intellectual" bullshit making no sense to reality.

kraz is kind of right, it's human nature, but we change nature a lot. people used to eat dirt and obey the king, now we are about 2 steps away from that and moving in the right direction.
it's also human nature to say "hang on a minute, wtf, i work harder than my boss"
i don't think he is advocating a land freeforall, that's a cheap shot. he is saying that if we all owned our own land and "agreed" in a slightly different way, there would be less people making money out of other people's hard work and misery.

hunter gatherer societies spend only 4 hours a day working. sure it's nice to have electricity, but for an extra 6 hours a day of work? don't you find it hard to find the time to USE the benefits of modern society?

just a thought.

need to get to mars , more free land (if you ignore the cost of getting there, which the 2cnd generation there surely will)
but this guy has a good heart some nice ideas , and way too much pot.

And then , one Thursday , nearly two thousand years after one man had been nailed to a tree for saying how great it would be to be nice to people for a change , a girl sitting in a small cafe in Rickmansworth suddenly realized what it was that had been going wrong all this time , and she finally knew how the world could be made a good and happy place . This time it was right , it would work , and no one would have to get nailed to anything .
This is not her story .
