Derren Brown Instantly Converts Atheists

Derren Brown (an atheist himself) poses as a Christian who is able to convert atheists with a touch.

The YouTube user MystryBox provided a bit of an explanation in a response video, which goes a fair amount of the way to explain the use of suggestion by Brown. I'm curious to know more about how the 'falling-back' process works, MystryBox suggests that this is a common occurrence in sessions such as these.

Look guys. In most cases crowd manipulation happens with the main actor interacting with planted actors in order to manipulate the rest of the crowd.

What makes you think the two poeple he has just "Touched" are not in on the plan. I know I sound cynical, but half of the non planted crowd that are unwavering atheists just left. That would mean that the ones left are those suseptible to manipulation.

I have watched this particular show in it's entirety, and Derren notes at the beginning that he uses no plants or actors during the course of his travels around the U.S.

Do you believe every thing you hear or see on the Magic box. This is about manipulation. I was not at the set to see what they told the crowd to do, nor was I privy to any of Mr. Browns plans outside of the TV Show, therefore I can neither deny nor confirm that he used actors or did not. But I can confirm that the possibility that he used planted actors is still possible.

But think about this, did he just manipulate you over the TV into thinking that he is an honest non actor using master of suggestion?

I have seen a lot of his shows and a stage show where his chooses audience members using a Frisbee, I don't believe he has planted actors. When in his shows he does cheat he normally comes clean (eg the System).

An interesting point, though I would argue that if he is manipulating people into a particular belief over the airwaves then he could just as effectively use the same techniques in person. I think it comes down to whether or not you believe this type of manipulation is possible. In any event, the best defense is to take a class in psychology -- Become aware of the methodology and the mindset that leaves you open to suggestion, and you will suddenly find yourself immune to their effects.

Have you ever physically abused inanimate objects when frustrated? You are assigning human intent when enacting revenge on the thing and it is very common in the human mind. It is similar to seeing shapes in clouds (especially if someone tells you what to look for), we sometimes jump the gun on what we are seeing and what we can socialize with. Theism is assigning human intent to our entire environment. This is an intuition, where we have received an impression without being aware of how we arrived at it.

from the 'Criticism' section on him on Wikipedia :

'In his book Tricks of the Mind, Brown writes, "I am often dishonest in my techniques, but always honest about my dishonesty. As I say in each show, 'I mix magic, suggestion, psychology, misdirection and showmanship'. I happily admit cheating, as it's all part of the game. I hope some of the fun for the viewer comes from not knowing what's real and what isn't. I am an entertainer first and foremost, and I am careful not to cross any moral line that would take me into manipulating people's real-life decisions or belief systems."

Brown claims he has never used actors or stooges in his work. In Tricks of the Mind he offers the defence that such a ploy is "artistically repugnant and simply unnecessary"; furthermore, he "would not want any participant to watch the [TV] show when it airs and see a different or radically re-edited version of what he understood to have happened"....'

Plants and actors (in the industry, we call them 'shills') are not necessary for Darren to achieve the results that he gets. As a trained hypnotist, it is easy to spot how he uses suggestion and compounding techniques to couple the participants' initial agreements to take part in the program in the first place with each of the subsequent agreements to comply with the "exercises" he asks them to perform. Once you have the participants' initial consent, it's merely a matter of maintaining and deepening the initial trance until you get the desired effects.
