MycroftHomlzFlower does hands signs too. It is not unusual for a dog to actually pick up on nonverbal queues first and then verbal ones.
gbfunksays...Usually (good) dog trainers will have you simultaneously teach your dog both a verbal command as well as a gesture when giving a comand. By doing this, you better communicate what you want your pooch to do and in my opinion it greatly improves the speed at which a dog will learn a new command. After the dog learns the behavior, you can supply either the verbal or the gesture to the dog with success. Give it a try the next time you teach your dog a trick and you'll be impressed... no deafness required.
