In this case he seems to have hit the car with his torso, and given the frame I've paused on a cup might offer better protection than a helmet.

I could be very mean and suggest that given his situational awareness he should probably wear a helmet when walking let alone cycling, but everyone zones out every once in a while so I could easily see myself in this position one day.
