Cop Leaps from One Speeding Car To Another, Hollywood Style

Daaaaamn! Is that cop even driving a police car?

Reckless driving? Try auto theft followed by reckless endangerment of the public (not just himself) and a refusal to stop. When you start to hear gunfire that's a clue things are starting to get pretty serious and he's damned lucky if a broken foot was all he ended up with.

This is freakin' stupid, just let the guy go ffs. You can't tell me they're not doing more endangering by shooting at him from a moving vehicle with a freakin' assault rifle.

"Option B men, lets back off and go to his house after lunch". click, "Cameras are rolling sir...", click, "Oh yeah, stay with A then. I need some options", click, "G36 from Ned's car?", click, "More prime time", click, "Have Ned jump over and beat on 'em, then throw him out while the car's still moving??", click, "Genius. You got the ball Ned", click.

Now that part I might agree with. Unless they are a real and present danger high speed chases are damned controversial and some areas have stopped doing them, if the chase should have taken place or not is a valid enough subject for debate and I'm not sure if we have enough info to judge that or not. But once they were in that chase they need to bring it to a stop as soon as possible and before it involves innocents.

Often they'll do a pit maneuver which forces the car to fishtail and go out of control, sometimes including it rolling over. I'm not sure why they didn't try that here. In the end the cop was too Rambo for my tastes but as far as danger to the driver goes what happened doesn't strike me as any more dangerous or damaging to him than a pit maneuver might have been.

People might be more willing to steal cars if they know no one will chase them. Similarly, people might be more willing to run from the cops in their own car if they think they can ditch it somewhere and claim theft.

We need safer ways of preventing people from trying to escape police intervention, but simply letting them go only works if you can identify the driver.

(Yes, I know it's an old video.)
