We are material beings. Nothing suggests anything else. Consciousness is a presentation of a small part of the brain function, which create the self for us. The self has evolutionary purposes, which crystallizes survivability, for one. We only have a slight connection to a bunch of body functions, mostly muscles (not sure that we can control anything else), but many, many processes happen outside of our consciousness.

The consciousness is merely a software that runs on our brain hardware, which has access to some things. "We" are not outside the body, using it, we are the consciousness.
