Climbing to the royal yard of a square rigger

The Charles Morgan, a classic square rigger, set sail for the first time in 90 years this June. Here, a deckhand named Cassie (a very agile gal) climbs to the Royal Yard, and gets set to help setting the sail (I think).

Now---imagine this in a "fresh breeze), rolling 30 degrees, with rain or sleet, preparing to go into action against an enemy square rigger---and easing out on the footropes to the end of the yard, with your body draped over the sail and no safety harness. At night.

Jesbus H. I wish the fisheye werent so intense. Would like to get a better feel for the scale.
Regardless, going up something like this has always been where the fun, challenge and excitement is for me, but coming down.... Just thinking about it destroys my nerve completely. I'd probably cling there like a baby for months, force someone to call in heli-support, or just jump off into the water. Fucking climbing down. That loosens bowels more than all the fiber in the world.

Supposedly, back in the day, real sailors used to slide down the backstays (vertical ropes behind the shrounds, without ratlines (horizontal steps)). Saved time.
