Christopher Hitchens vs. Bill Maher's Audience

In this clip from Real Time, Christopher Hitchens really upsets the audience.

I kinda agree with the Hitch that Bush isnt a complete dupe like Maher says constantly, but unlike Hitchens I disagree on Bush's policies, and I dont think he is fit to be president, and should be impeached for his lies and mistakes.. But a complete moron? No.

I also support Hitchens objections to theocracies, but bombing them back to the middle ages materially is not the best way to get them out of the middle ages intellectually. I think the few choppers who aided in the tsunami rescue efforts did more to win the war on terror than the two bush invasions combined.

I've said it before: I pity Bush. I feel sorry for him. I'm glad I don't have that job and I know he was born into politics. I've seen his older speeches where he was quite eloquent and he's lost that. Presidents tend to lose a lot in office. I also absolutely don't believe that he is the one to blame for any of this. He's a representative of the government --he's not the government, nor is he the one calling the shots. He's a puppet and I'm fairly certain he's known that since he was a kid. It sucks. I can't hold Bush accountable for the actions of the US government. I just can't do it.

If I had a little silver spoon I could gather my tears. Maybe you should write a form letter that you could then mail out to the many hundreds of thousands of Iraqis who have been slaughtered these last few years. I'm sure they will understand.

I'm of the opinion that no person could rise to the position of President of the United States of America without being exceptionally smart, well educated in a diverse range of subjects, extremely ambitious, and possessing a unique range of leadership skills. Certainly George W. Bush meets those standards. Most of us are radically unqualified in intellect, ambition or record, for roles in high elected office. Yet we laugh at his frequent verbal gaffes and apparent simple Texan persona, as if we think we would clearly do better if we were in his place.

I suspect it is exactly this carefully staged character, the simple "good hearted fella from Texas" who kept winning elections to those who bought the persona and loved it, and who keeps effectively ducking and weaving his critics who buy the persona and don't.

I think the seed of truth is that George W. Bush isn't a truly great orator, despite his legitimate range of skills. But the real measure of any president should not be his swagger and charm, but rather the policies, effectiveness, integrity, and honesty of their administration and the consequences of their actions. By this measure, it's my opinion that George W. Bush ranks among the worst presidents in modern history and indeed his intellect measures quite poorly.

Is he smarter or more educated than me? Quite probably, yes. I'm honest enough to admit that.
But he has made horrible decisions for my country, for reasons that I feel range from paranoid and stubborn to greedy and power hungry. Likewise, I don't buy his simpleton act for one moment, and nor should Bill Maher.

I think he's more a willing and surprisingly effective figurehead than a puppet. Indeed if this president, or any other, started speaking outside of his own administration's agendas, he would find his support within the administration and political party immediately dissolve. But I simply don't believe that George W. Bush is likely to be in any significant opposition to the core agendas of his own administration. They are a highly motivated, carefully coordinated organization, and they work diligently to remain "on message". I'm quite certain that the president is personally invested in this process.

I feel that it's more important for concerned citizens to think critically and logically about the Bush administration's misguided domestic and foreign policies, and how they affect the United States now and into our future.
