I actually saw a special on the making of starwars and all of the sound effects that go into it and how they were made. Ordinary stuff like tapping on a guy wire, for example, was the sound of lightsabers crashing against one another. I wouldn't be surprised if it was something exactly like this that was the original concept for the "voice".
