Charity Mascot is Policed for Intefering with News Broadcast

This mascot is raising awareness for a charity and gets in a confrontation with some camera men. Who's right? Who's wrong? You decide...

oh boy, i DEFINITELY would have gone to jail in that situation. In fact I almost want to downvote the dude for not calling their bluff.

Any legal experts care to tell me what's the actual crime being committed here? (apart from the camera guy's verbal assaults and the policemens' vague interpretation of the law)

News crews never like reality getting in the way of a good technogadgetlaunch story.

i go insane when there is a news crew getting in the way of my daily commute in NYC, and i agree that its definitively fun to piss off meathead NY cops. but there is no denying that this brightly colored mascot for hungrr was being obnoxious and rude.

playing the poor oppressed innocent victim is too common within these activist groups...that orange headed idiot knew he was being a jerk, but in his mind it was justified because he was "sticking it to the man" and he was fighting for a good cause.. why do these people think maddening behavior is the appropriate way to make a statement?

And of course this was immediately uploaded online to show the internet community how piece of shit newscasters and ny cops want to destroy hungrr.com!! ugh.. those fascist pigs..

hungrr.com's tactics (as far as this videos concerned) cheapen actual global issues into gimmicky sympathy video clips for solidarity seeking college students..

Anyone who really thinks the charity dude in the suit is in the wrong here is out of their f*cking mind.

The news people are obviously, clearly and categorically, completely and utterly in the wrong and so are the meathead mafia nazi brainwashed thicko NY cops.

The camera guys are treating people on the street like extras on a movie set. It's totally shameful and pathetic. I'm actually surprised the cops didn't move away the guy with the camcorder as well.

Gee, I don't really see the need for the confrontation here. Each person had a job to do and they're not mutually exclusive. The mascot didn't need to be a part of the TV shot to complete his task and the camera crew didn't want him in the shot - so what's the problem? Wouldn't common courtesy suggest that you just move outof the way and continue doing what you were tasked with?

I don't know - I see the whole "I have a right to be on the sidewalk where I want to" but it just seems a bit petty and juvenile. I could see it if he were there first, or he had to be there to do what he was doing, etc. but he didn't.

I mean it's a little like pointing at someone and saying "I have a right to stand exactly where you are" and then arguing about who gets to stand in "the" spot. There's room for everyone and each can do his/her activity if we just accomodate one another.

Oh, and as to the camera guy's rudeness, I'd have to see the whole confrontation before making a call on that one - you don't know what went before - may be he was polite at first and then lost his patience - who knows?

This video, like many others of its kind, is edited to produce a certain point of view and we should bear that in mind. Still, the ones getting the most upset and causing the most trouble were the camera crew. It's not as though they can stop foot traffic wherever they please in order to get some meaningless news shot.

Also, I would love to hear what exactly the cops were going to charge this guy with. Standing on the sidewalk is not a crime that I know of and neither is obstructing a news crew. Even if the guy was being a total dickhead (which I'm not at all convinced he was) that's not a crime either.

This is basically the equivolent of somebody not letting another person into their lane when driving and then having the guy trying to get in call the cops and make the person in the lane to begin with make room for the merger. Sorry...that's not how life works.

Whatever. This guy is with the Now Corporation which is a viral marketing firm. He has his job to do, but so does the other crew. He doesn't need to be like all of those douchebags that try to get on random News reports. And getting on TV wouldn't really have helped his cause anyway, since the only way you knew what the hell this guy was up to was by reading a piece of paper pinned to his chest.

The TV crew was from G4tv's Attack of the Show. The reporter in brown is Zach Selwyn and they just did a pretty funny rebuttal of all the undeserved outrage that this video has caused. Hopefully someone will 'Tube it soon.

Oh, and their iPhone eBay listing got hijacked and the auction cancelled, so their weak little attempt at charity has, so far, given nothing to the intended recipients. I wonder how much Now is making from all this.

TV guy was being a jerk because he was trying to do his job and trying to get a big giant orange jackass out of his shot while he's trying to cover the iPhone launch? I'm sorry, I'm not sympathetic. I've seen the G4 shots, and it's unfortunate that I can't find them posted anywhere. They consist of Zach, the reporter, and nothing but a giant orange cyclops behind him. It's not like the Hungrr mascot was innocuous and small in the background. The background WAS the mascot. It's all nice and warm and fuzzy that the mascot is raising awareness for whatever, but people have jobs to do and his was to get him out of his damn shot. They didn't fly out to New York City from Los Angeles where they are based to get a giant stuffed head in their report. It really doesn't matter how unimportant the iPhone might seem compared to Hungrr's mission. At that time, at that moment, the iPhone was his job and his livelihood. If G4 wants to help out with awareness for Hungrr's mission, then Hungrr should contact them and set up a proper interview and people might actually know what the hell a giant orange cyclops with a piece of paper pinned to it means in the first place.
