The (there's only one?) flaw with a democratic republic is that once someone has made campaign promises there is no law saying they have to follow them.

I propose we move to daily elections. Drop below 50% approval rating and you better start packing. Ya, that probably won't work.

How do you convince a power hungry authoritarian despot to do the nation building? Starve his people by isolating his country with economic trade sanctions or withholding humanitarian aid? Make it harder for his self-serving oligarchy to buy their iPods and travel abroad? Better yet, how do you get around the veto wielding nations protecting their economic interests in the first place?
