Speech by Jeremy Scahill author of Blackwater - The Rise of the World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army. JoDavies County, Illinois May 15, 2007

"Order 17 granted a sweeping immunity to all contractors in [Iraq] to any prosecution under Iraqi law. In other words, you could walk up, if you're a contractor, to an Iraqi, and shoot them in the head. And there's not a thing an Iraqi court can do."

"I don't see how this system is defensible, where we have billions of dollars of taxpayer money going to fund corporations whose entire livelihoods are built of of the escalation of war and conflict"

The more they escalate the war, the more money they make. The incentive structure is not right for privatization.

"In 1921 Adolf Hitler formed his own private army called Sturm Abteilung (Storm Section). The SA (also known as stormtroopers or brownshirts) were instructed to disrupt the meetings of political opponents and to protect Hitler from revenge attacks. Captain Ernst Roehm of the Bavarian Army played an important role in recruiting these men, and became the SA's first leader."
