Bill Maher And Rep Anthony Weiner Discuss Healthcare 9/11/09

I don't get how people can argue against it. I really don't.

Well, the argument gets down to one thing on the surface -- how can we afford it.

I say do it anyway. We will figure it out.

Underneath the surface.... this is my idea, I've never heard anyone say this out loud... if the plan leads to employers abandoning the for-profit policies, it will lead to the collapse and therefore effectively nationalizing existing companies, or at least portions of companies. As Capitalists, with a big ole Capital C, this is a thought not to be borne.

I have to say, it does bother me to think that the rules get changed on folks, after they have invested their money and their energy growing something.

For Profit health insurance should never have been allowed to start with. Our first mistake.

So when you say -- how can someone argue against this, just imagine that you personally have $50,000 in insurance company stock. Then you might have some sympathy.

We still need to do it. I'm just saying there is another side to this, and if you personalize it rather than making it those big fat cats over there, you might develop some empathy.

We can send them all a fruit basket.

^ Just so you know, in Israel, we have several "private" healthcare companies, and they're by no means considered insurance. There is no such thing as a pre-existing condition and there is no such thing as being denied treatment for irrelevant technicalities like I've been hearing happens in the US too often.

I'm not entirely sure how exactly our model works, since I've never had any problems with it or attempted to find out. There is no assigned doctor = I can go to whichever doctor I want, but I prefer the ones who work with my healthcare provider, since those will cost me almost nothing.

The only problems I can think of right now are the doctor shortages, hospital bed shortages and controversy on the approved-drug policy (they're thinking of adding Viagra to the list of government subsidized drugs...).

So, in conclusion, my point is that you guys are getting screwed by your insurance industry at the moment. There is no other way to say this.
