Bad News in Zimbabwe

By ANGUS SHAW, Associated Press Writer

HARARE, Zimbabwe - Zimbabwe's opposition leader has fled to the Dutch Embassy saying he feared for his safety, while police on Monday raided his party's headquarters and took about 60 people away.

Morgan Tsvangirai went to the embassy Sunday shortly after announcing he was withdrawing from Friday's presidential runoff against longtime leader Robert Mugabe, citing violence against opposition supporters, a Dutch Foreign Ministry spokesman said.

It's hard for me to believe sometimes that all people come from the same planet. Here is a glimpse of what is happening in Zimbabwe ( taken from http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/africa/article4116638.ece ):

The men who pulled up in three white pickup trucks were looking for Patson Chipiro, head of the Zimbabwean opposition party in Mhondoro district. His wife, Dadirai, told them he was in Harare but would be back later in the day, and the men departed.

An hour later they were back. They grabbed Mrs Chipiro and chopped off one of her hands and both her feet. Then they threw her into her hut, locked the door and threw a petrol bomb through the window.

Fucking Mugabe - what's it going to take to get rid of this guy? Economic sanctions have managed to hurt the people and the country as a whole - but not him, surrounded by his cronies and sycophants.

To some degree I blame England. Mugabe is the product of a post-colonial meltdown.

Agreed. England and other nations really did a number on Africa, Asia, the Middle East, etc. long before America did. As far as sanctions...I think something needs to be done to show disapproval, but when you have a country like this it seems like the people in general suffer - not those in power.

It's likely he will eventually be assassinated by someone in his inner circle if the international community makes it seem like they might intervene. In that case, Zimbabwe would be ruled by another ruthless thug who learned from Mugabe how to oppress and thieve from his people. Apparently Zimbabwe's currency is currently running with an inflation rate of about 9,000,000%.

Sanctions never have and never will have work.

Remember these countries under economic sanctions? South Africa, Iraq, Iran, Cuba, North Korea and more.

Let's be honest. No one gives a shit about Africa. The international community doesn't. It's not in Europe. It doesn't have oil. Plus its a bunch of fucking black people! Its Africa!

African leaders will not do anything because they are still raw with post colonial feelings of sticking it out together, remembering Mugabe like some war hero that fought against African oppression. In reality most just do not want to commit military forces to force regime change.

There will be massive killing. There will be huge human rights abuses. The west will fumble its fingers issuing edict after edict of proclamations against the abuse being vetted out. Then just do nothing.

Then years later we will have a film called Hotel Harare where we can all have a big cry about injustice in the world. It will win lots of Oscars.

This is Rwanda all over again.
