Croccydilesays...Interesting solution, although movie studios have been dealing with this problem for an incredibly long time with chroma keying. It seems to be a combination of edge detection with keying... although he did not demonstrate it with a more complicated background. At least with professional video software its gotten to the point to where you just take a dropper and say "This is the background key color" and it magically removes the green/blue and with refinement you get rid of the ambient tint.
Granted I still see movies today where I notice poor keying where an actors hair still has tints of the key color in or behind it... so its still a difficult problem regardless.
