Idiot Drives Civic Into River, Rescued By Reporter

It's actually a Honda Insight hybrid

I'd leave a poor taste joke about hybrid drivers but that would be too easy - you're already thinking of one anyway.

Monsters

The family being the 'monsters' would have been too easy. I got that vibe from the start. So I was pleased with the twist. Pretty good.

Hero Defends a Defenseless Blind Kid

Payback says...

[Updated at 10:00 a.m.] On Twitter, the teen clarified that he was never kicked off the football team—that story was "made up" by the media, he said. The school district also denied that he would be suspended; whether the petition influenced that decision is unclear. For me, the fact that 20,000 people expected the hero to get unfairly railroaded by the system is still quite a testament to the ubiquity of zero tolerance.

Yeah, it was way too easy to believe he'd get treated unfairly. I'm glad the cops are trying to charge the bully though. That shit, no matter WHAT the blind kid could of said or did, is just fucking troglodytic.

Guns with History

Yeah, you got me there. Clever girl.

You want credible sources?

Here ya go:

(and the debate rages on)

Am 100% in agreement - "The problem is that it's simply way too easy to get a gun in the US." As a Canadian living in the USA for the past 15 years, not wanting to become a US citizen because I'd have to cut out half my brain, I've been through Canada's attempts at gun control too. Can't even buy a box of .22 shells at home without completing a classroom course (or is it two now?) which I think is the door swinging too far the other way. Worth noting perhaps is the incidence of gun crime in major metropolitan centers in Canada *appears* to be on the rise... would be nice if someone out there could do a comprehensive update using the same methodology as e.g. Mauser to see if it's real.

Congratulations, you've managed to recognise an obviously tongue-in-cheek comment by applying basic reading skills. Oh no, wait... you didn't.

Here ya go:
correlation of gun ownership with suicide and homocide
How right-to-carry impacts the crime rate (hint: it's not good)

Understand, I don't want to ban guns. I have friends who hunt and shoot a lot, (I've done it myself a few times and quite frankly, shooting is fun).

The problem is that it's simply way too easy to get a gun in the US. You know why you have "armed thugs" breaking into your house? BECAUSE EVERYONE HAS A FUCKING GUN. In other 1st world countries, most break-ins are unarmed, because as Jim said, most people just want your TV.

Now, it may be that the ship has sailed in the U.S. because you failed to do anything about this for so long. But it would absolutely make sense to make it just a bit more difficult for anyone to have access to a gun.

Congratulations. You've managed to capture the entire diversity of the US by visiting several times and not get shot or had a gun pointed at you. This is like forming an opinion about whether sharks will bite humans after you've laid on the beach once or twice and have never been bitten. Searching for some relevance here... and ... nope, none.

Most Insane Footage Yet From The China Explosion

Asmo says...

Way too easy to sit on the sidelines and making perfectly rational decisions after the fact. Until you've had this sort of shit happen right in front of you, you don't know how you'll react.

eg. Most of the vids, people don't step away from the glass or seek cover, they just stare. They are dreadfully lucky they didn't wear a face full of glass for both secondary explosions. Rational thought goes out the door in these moments.

I agree with @Ickster.

My reaction was disgust not to the language but to the general delight the two of them are emanating.

You can hear the glee in their voices like they're children watching a fucking fireworks show.

It's a fucking huge explosion, folks, and it's very likely killing people right now. How about a little gravitas, or at least a little bit of "OMFG" instead of "Woohoo! ROFLMAO!"

You're grown-ups FFS.

How about a little love for long-time but low-star members? (Sift Talk Post)

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

I would generally agree with this comment. If we could find another meritocratic point to add to the stew, I would be in favour of that. I don't think it should just be time based. Or number of votes - too easy to game.

Don't touch my pole.

gwiz665 said:

The whole idea is meritocracy - so far only video posts (and starred comments) have been the metric used for establishing this merit, but it sounds like a valid concern/idea to base it on other factors as well, such as high comment engagement, general good behavior etc. it's just hard to automate.

XCOM 2 - Gameplay Trailer (E3 2015)

Jinx says...

Invisible Inc didn't always include the rewind mechanic and I don't think it was actually a planned feature. Later iterations probably balanced the game more around it, but I still think it is kinda amazing how well it works given it wasn't in the game until relatively late into development.

I'd actually very much like the game to penalise you for not using rewind. Or rather I'd like the game to be balanced with assumption you will use it. I like that rewind creates a nice middle ground between quick save scumming and iron mode. I think it allows for a more challenging game in other respects and that doesn't feel frustrating when a miss click puts your main girl in open ground surrounded by cyberdisks (especially when the UI was pretty bad when it came to different elevations...). It smooths the transition from too easy to too hard.

That said, there are a number of changes from Enemy Unknown that I'd like to have more priority. Borrowing from Invisible Inc again, the ever raising alarm level in that creates a sense of urgency that I never felt in XCOM, even in the bomb missions and with the meld resource. I never lost a soldier because I forced them to take an incredible risk for the sake of the mission, I really only lost people because an unlucky shot dinked them in head across the map when they were in heavy cover. It looks like they are perhaps addressing urgency with the threat of reinforcements, which is cool. The other frustration I had with XCOM:EU/EW is that it always seemed to punish scouting. You'd effectively "wake up" the aliens by finding them which really disincentivised spreading out to cover more ground. It was simply safer to move as ball and let the enemies run into you (with the possible exception of the terror missions). it looks like they might be addressing that by making you the insurgent force with ambush tactics etc.

So yeah. I'm hyped.

ChaosEngine said:

I never played the original old school X COM, but I played all of Enemy Unknown on Ironman, and I have mixed feelings about a rewind system.

First, I think ironman really adds to the experience of X COM. There's a genuine sense of loss when one of your best troops dies.

I wouldn't mind an option for a rewind system, by with one caveat.
Invisible Inc. is clearly designed with the rewind system in mind (and it's a great game). But I'd still like to play X COM without the rewind without the game penalising me for it, i.e. the games get easier with it rather than harder without it.

I'm not sure if I'm explaining that very well.

On a road racing bike, how does he does these stunts?

newtboy says...

Pretty sure that's highway 1, not 101. ;-)
I wonder what forest that is. Amazingly, those trees looked a little small to me when compared to the ones in my neighborhood.

When I was a teenager I had a good racing road bike that I found a set of narrow knobbies for and I used to ride it down dirt trails. It's not easy. Those handle bars are narrow and positioned low, making it all too easy to just go over the front. Impressive skill this guy has, and balls of hardened titanium.

Clueless Gamer: Conan Reviews CoD Advanced Warfare

SDGundamX says...

Oh totally. Shadow of Mordor is GOTY for me, but those two boss fights had me going "WTF?!?" for like 10 minutes after each of them.

To be honest, aside from those fights, I liked how they implemented the "last chance" QTE events. They were too easy to do with a mouse and keyboard but once I switched over to a game controller I found them moderately challenging enough that I still died a couple of times.

As far as Advanced Warfare goes, this article on Polygon does a great job of explaining why the funeral scene is epic fail.

Only way to make Quicktime Events lamer is to apply their EPIC BUTTON MASH principles to thoroughly NON-EPIC things...

I really enjoyed Shadows of Mordor, but it took a big hit by having the *midpoint* boss be "EPIC ACTUAL BATTLE", and then the two *final* bosses being "EPIC SNEAK UP AND STAB DUDE IN BACK 3 TIMES" followed by "WE RAN OUT OF IDEAS, SO RANDOMLY PRESS A FEW BUTTONS IN THIS QUICKTIME EVENT". /sigh

A 6.0 Earthquake - USA vs. China

spawnflagger says...

It's unfair to compare this remote rural town with a big urban city with well established infrastructure. A better comparison would be the tornadoes that hit rural towns in the US, annually destroying many homes and taking several lives. Yes, those houses could be built to be tornado-proof, but they aren't because it would cost 3x as much and the average residents are too poor to afford it (and storm shelters and advanced warning make it less deadly)

(Of course, China should still be more strict about building codes. Although they'd have to tackle corruption first- too easy to bribe inspectors, and too many contractors cut corners to save money. They are rightly focused on improving food safety now - what other country would you find counterfeit eggs?? )

Greek military must be terrifying on the battlefield
