What should the default color scheme of VideoSift be? (User Poll by dag)
Wherever you end up, the contrast between background and text really needs to be stronger. It really shouldn't be a strain to read anything.
And the blue text on the light textured background of the Top Sifts area literally shimmers for me. I do hope that at least is fixed.
My personal preference is the light background. I physically feel pushed away with the dark.
But this is not about my personal preference -- it is about the casual visitor. As a constant user, I can choose my preference of light over dark (once you fix the contrast, oh please, oh please No gray letters!!!). I
I would go with the industry standard for the casual user, and most websites have a lighter background. What is the message you want to send to a casual user? The dark has a specific message, the light has a specific message. Which do you want to convey?
VideoSift 5.0 Launch! (Sift Talk Post)
Love the responsive design.
This comment posting UI is phenomenal.
You're right. I'm digging the dark UI. (The texture might be a bit strong for my tastes, though.)
Overall, really like the updates! (Gonna go try it on my iPad and iPhone now!)
Dry Cured Meat
>> ^TheFreak:
OH MY GOD I LOVE VOLPES PROSCIUTTO!!!!
Grew up in St Louis.
I have never had that sort of meat, I always see it. I had picked up some dry cured .. pepper salami or something like that, I love the texture and the taste. Really neat way to "cook " something.
When the world goes to shit I see salt as being something people will want to stock pile, like guns and food. If the world went to crap all over, spices would be like money again. WEIRD the way things have gone.

bioshock infinite - beast of america trailer

Gimme gimme gimme.
Bioshock is still my favourite gaming experience. I am just now playing Bioshock 2.
This may be my reason to finally upgrade my 5 year old pc. It's been able to continue to play the few games I throw at it, but this might finally break it!
Actually you'd be surprised, they are still designing this for the same console that ran Bioshock 1 so they can't exactly push the polygons or textures any more than they did on the first game.
"The Ancestor" by Darlingside

This is an email submission request by the creator - very cool video. More details:
The Ancestor is a collaboration between Chinese Takeout and Crazy Lake Pictures, both young production companies forged in the fires of speed-filmmaking challenges. Chinese Takeout members Timothy Hahn – Pixar employee by day, ruthless preditor (producer/editor) by night – and Abraham Dieckman, writer-director of the upcoming sci-fi feature Trash and Progress – recently made a splash on the festival circuit with the animated short film Cadaver, featuring the voices of Christopher Lloyd, Kathy Bates, and Tavi Gevinson. Crazy Lake Pictures accomplices Mike Lavoie, co-executive producer of the acclaimed film Sleepwalk with Me, and Keith Boynton, whose feature film Chasing Home was chosen as the opening-night premiere of the 2012 Gotham Screen International Film Festival, also collaborated on the well-received "Here We Go" music video for Brooklyn-based band The Spring Standards.
The Ancestor is Crazy Lake's second video for Darlingside (after the jaunty parable "Terrible Things"), and the first meeting of the minds between Crazy Lake and Chinese Takeout, though Hahn and Boynton have enjoyed the texture of each other's brains since their days doing improv comedy together at Amherst College. All four men are sensitive film nerds who look forward to many future collaborations.

OK, 2 things really suspicious about this video:
1) I'm pretty sure I can hear autotune artifacts (I work with audio / vocalists a lot) and a vocal that is consistently too in pitch.
2) Notice at 2:49 the microphone is absolutely miles from her mouth and the vocal is still entirely consistent, no evidence of a change in level or tone that you'd expect a microphone to display (re: proximity effect) - this hints to me at the vocal being pre-recorded. They also cut away at this point which makes me even more suspicious.
Also:
3) The US version of the same show, produced by the same production company, has admitted using autotune: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-11056050
This coming from a person who got goosebumps for the amazing TV debut performances of both Alexis Jordan and Bianca Ryan who were both imperfect, but utterly thrilling.

1. I think you're hearing things. Specifically, some of her high to low runs and a couple rising melodies beginning with low notes at the bottom of her range are slightly off key. The way she leads into notes using the back of her throat creates a slight buzz that makes her voice sound autotuned.
2. The beginning of the word "butterflies" comes out at a lower volume as she brings the microphone to her face.
1) It's the texture of the audio of the vocal and not the pitching that leads me to believe it's auto tune. Autotuning has a sound, and it's not necessarily to do with the pitching of the note. A bit like how tape or MP3s of even a specific type of pre-amp has a specific sound carachteristic.
2) I think that any slight dip in volume is because it's a low note outside of her range, but my point was not to do with volume, but to do with proximity effect. With the exception of omni-directional microphones the frequency response of a microphone changes with distance from the source of the sound- simply put: the further the mic is away from the person's mouth the thinner and less bassy it becomes. Even a change in gain / volume will not mask this.
Cat Sex Goes Wrong
Yeah, the texture of the tom's penis is similar to that of a cat's tongue. Not nice.
Guy Says Words Backwards in Seconds
I wonder if he has some sort of
sensory cross-oversynesthesia, like Daniel Tammet, who sees numbers that have their own unique shape, color and texture.Maybe this guy just "sees" the words written backwards as he hears them, and just reads them.
Also, these guys are high as fuck and the way that moron was holding the shotgun with his finger in the trigger well makes me want to slap him. Not for being high, but for (poorly) dealing with firearms in an altered state of mind.

I really like the textured burlap pattern on DC's desk.

How to Make a Better Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich
Meh. I'm not keen on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to begin with, but that's just because I'm not fond of Jams / Jellies.
However, I can tell you that when I DO eat peanut butter, I can't stand "fresh". Generally they're slimy, have no texture, and they run. A lot. So, what that effectively means is that if you're like me and enjoy a good amount of Peanut butter on your sandwich, fresh won't get the job done, it'll run off the side and leave you with a skiff. Adding heat will only make that worse.
Also, I know this is neither here nor there, but I'm not feeling the retardation of making a sandwich. (I.e. slathering as much peanut butter on and then slapping on the top half, a la 1:42.) Don't know why, but that 'example' just annoys me to no end.
Five Reasons to Eat Insects
Yeh, I had grasshoppers in melted cheese once. Was actually very tasty. Texture wasn't at all offputting. Wasn't chewey, just had a bit of a crunch like brown rice or something. Tasted good too, like seafood. Frankly I find it a lot less repulsive than say, oysters or mussels. Its more like eating whitebait. I think if I had the option I'd give up meat in favour of insects.

Unreal Engine 4 - Development Walkthrough
Megatextures made Rage the most beautiful FPS I have played yet. Don't knock it! I am sure this does some form of texture streaming. The Unreal engine has been doing that since UT3.
I didn't like the way he kept calling things "accurate" when they were clearly hacked fakey versions and not at all accurate. The distributed lighting was based on a specularity effect. I noticed many surfaces right on top of the red carpet was not colored by light bouncing off the carpet instead they just colored a specular highlight on the object so it actually looked pretty bad in places where objects were close to eachother.
