Dick Cheney: "Torture Works"

Asmo says...

>> ^Truth:
I don't really see why people are getting so butthurt about torture. Sometimes you have to break some eggs to make an omelet.

I don't see why people get so butthurt over September 11. Sometimes you have to fly some planes in to some large towers to make an omelet...

See how fucking idiotic that line of reasoning is?

It's always funny when it's happening to someone else, but when others use the same fuckass logic you spew to hurt you and yours?

Olbermann Offers $1000/sec For Hannity Waterboarding

Irishman says...

"Right after his public address to a shaken nation on September 11, 2001, President Bush gave his White House staff wide secret orders, saying, “I don’t care what the international lawyers say, we are going to kick some ass.”

In the months that followed, Administration attorneys translated their president’s otherwise unlawful orders into U.S. policy into three controversial, neo-conservative legal doctrines:

(1.) the president is above the law,
(2.) torture is legally acceptable,
(3.) the US Navy base at Guantanamo Bay is not US territory."

And now, EIGHT fucking years later, US television says its OK to start talking about it, and so the internets are suddenly awash with all this waterboarding stuff.

I actually find it insulting to watch ANY of these American TV pundits talking about this, when none of them said a damn thing when it was going on for EIGHT YEARS.

Shame on them, and shame on the American television media.

Dennis Miller is a Tool

budzos says...

What the fuck happened to Dennis Miller? He used to be my hero in the Dennis Miller Live days, right up until a few months after September 11 2001. Now, I suppose out of fear, he's become some kind of Stepford talking head on a 24/7 conservative Kool-Aid drip.

Japanese Animation of the Hiroshima A-Bomb

deedub81 says...

I've been to Peace Memorial Park and stood a few feet from the building (still standing) above which the bomb detonated. We sang the Japanese National Anthem in the square in front of a large crowd of Japanese people. Very powerful experience. We then walked through the museum there. I fought back tears the whole time.

Here's some perspective: As a result of the attacks, 74 times as many people died in Nagasaki and Hiroshima, as did on September 11, 2001.

Taliban attacked with Artillery Fire.

Fade says...

When the US provides evidence then you will have a right to make those claims. Till then STFU.

On September 21, 2001, the Taliban responded that if the United States could bring evidence that bin Laden was guilty they would hand him over, stating there was no evidence in their possession linking him to the September 11 attacks.[90]

On September 22, 2001, the United Arab Emirates and later Saudi Arabia withdrew their recognition of the Taliban as the legal government of Afghanistan, leaving neighboring Pakistan as the only remaining country with diplomatic ties. On October 4, 2001, it is believed that the Taliban covertly offered to turn bin Laden over to Pakistan for trial in an international tribunal that operated according to Islamic Sharia law.[109][110] Pakistan, recently recast as an ally of the west, is believed to have rejected the offer (even though they still recognized the Taliban).

On October 7, 2001, before the onset of military operations, the Taliban ambassador to Pakistan offered to "detain bin Laden and try him under Islamic law" if the United States made a formal request and presented the Taliban with evidence.[111] This counter offer was immediately rejected by the U.S. as insufficient.

Bin Laden for his part, maintained America's attack on the Taliban after 9/11 was motivated only by its hatred for Islam.

I agree with your statement Kreegath.

However what is most striking to me is how torture and it's legal application within the current administration goes against American ideals in the 20th century and legally for over 250 years.

During the last century Americans valiantly against these coercive means collectively pointing to them as techniques only utilized by the Nazis, the Khmer Rouge, the VC and the Soviet Union. The US pushed for and developed the Geneva conventions that abolished torture.

But within the span of a few short years they threw out what took decades to create. The Americans no longer can look at themselves as the good guys when it comes to the issue of human rights.

Worst still the President now puts himself above the law, above the house, above the senate, above the supreme court and the American constitution.

"In most issues of the Washington Monthly, we favor articles that we hope will launch a debate. In this issue we seek to end one. The unifying message of the articles that follow is, simply, Stop. In the wake of September 11, the United States became a nation that practiced torture. Astonishingly—despite the repudiation of torture by experts and the revelations of Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib—we remain one. As we go to press, President George W. Bush stands poised to veto a measure that would end all use of torture by the United States. His move, we suspect, will provoke only limited outcry. What once was shocking is now ordinary."

The Future of North American Integration in the Wake of the Terrorist Attacks

http://www.cfr.org/publication/4280/future_of_north_american_integration_in_the_wake_of_the_terrorist_attacks.html

The Atlanta Roundtable held its second session on October 17, 2001 to discuss the future of North American integration in the wake of the terrorist attacks. Gordon D. Giffin, Vice Chairman of Long, Aldridge & Norman and former U.S. Ambassador to Canada, and Robert A. Pastor, Professor of Political Science at Emory University, led the discussion.

The Atlanta Roundtable addressed the following questions:

What were the prospects of North American integration prior to September 11? What are they now?

What has been U.S. policy toward Canada and Mexico vis á vis trade? How has it changed since September 11? How should it change?

How will security concerns on the Canadian and Mexican borders affect trade policy going forward?

How has the United States’ response to the terrorist attacks (i.e. enforcing a security perimeter with Canada) affected our broader relations?

What are the costs and trade-offs of future U.S. actions to deal with the terrorist threat on our borders?

What can or should Canada and Mexico be doing to support the “war” on terrorism?
