Herbie Hancock jams with his Fairlight CMI - 1983

k8_fan says...

Nah, I suspect he's entirely computer based, with only one really nice MIDI keyboard. But Herbie is always on the cutting edge. 5 years ago, I attended a demo of the future of surround music, and the main piece was by Herbie Hancock...in 10.2 channel surround.

David 'Fingerrs' Haynes PWNS A Drum Machine

Crazy-drummer says...

Wow! That's awesome! He just convinced me that drum machines aren't all that bad.

Toontrack EZ Drummer, is a VSTi Virtual instrument thats got pre-recorded "real" drum sounds and gives you the ability to play drum machines or electronic drums and assigning those sounds to it through midi signals instead of the crappy General Midi sounds.

The pedal his left foot is playing is a Hi-Hat controller which allows him to " open" and "close" the Hi-Hat so when he hits the Hi Hat button it plays a different sound depending on the pressure he is putting on the pedal.

Tangerine Dream live in 1976 - Analogue Synth Heaven!

djsunkid says...

This is heaven for people who like all this sort of analogue gear. It may also represent hell for the original designers of MIDI. Nothing was standard back then- getting one piece of gear to "talk" to another was a crapshoot at best, a nightmare at worst.

This is Tangerine Dream while they were still awesome, before they got too new age for their own good.

Allegro non troppo (1h 20min)

pyrex says...

"Allegro non troppo is a Bruno Bozzetto animated film released in 1977. The film is a parody of Disney's Fantasia, though possibly more of a challenge to Fantasia than parody status would imply. In music, an instruction of "allegro ma non troppo" means to play "fast, but not overly so". In the context of this film, and without the "ma", it means Not So Fast!, an interjection meaning "slow down" or "think before you act" and refers to the film's pessimistic view of Western progress (as opposed to the optimism of Disney's original).

The film features six classical pieces:

Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune by Claude Debussy
Slavonic Dance No. 7 by Antonín Dvořák
Boléro by Maurice Ravel
Valse Triste by Jean Sibelius
Concerto in C Major by Antonio Vivaldi
The Firebird by Igor Stravinsky

The classical pieces are set to color animation, ranging from comedy to deep tragedy. At the beginning, in between the animation, and at the end is black and white live action film, displaying the (well, not the actual) animator, orchestra, conductor, and filmmaker, with many humorous scenes about the (again, not actual) production of the film."

Finally, additional props to sometimes for posting the sad cat segment of this intriguing movie.

How to take infrared pictures with a digital camera

How to take infrared pictures with a digital camera

bamdrew says...

Fun quick and easy DIY setup for messing about, but... x-ray? I assume you added that for effect (grab people's attention and whatnot). Near-infrared is certainly no where near x-ray, and I bet the majority of the videosift crowd would call you out on this (smart bunch of folks).

This setup will selectively block the majority of whats maybe below 550nm and depending on your camera sensor and built in filter you're going to get maybe up to 850nm showing up with long exposures (solidly above visual spectrum, which ends around 760nm).

I've been toying with replacing the internal filter of an old camera with a clear filter (which doesn't block IR light) for literally 3 years (I cut up some glass slides from the lab and tried to make it the right size to replace the filter, but got busy with my research and have stayed too busy to mess with photography much). This easy setup has its problems, like the large hotspot of white in many of the pictures and a softening of focus, but its so quick and easy that it could provide an afternoon of fun.

oh, and the midi music is hilarious and awesome

Guitar Hero won't teach you to play, but Fretlight can...

viewer_999 says...

Nothing of picking hand, nothing of proper technique for either (pretty much the most important thing), notation or theory, and a need for midi versions of the song you want (which are limited as hell in and of themselves). In other words, it's gimmicky junk.

westy says...

inorder to make this a realy good system you would need a sensor on the gutar that moniters what u do then a piont system and a way to reward well played notes + decent music quality not midi. then u could have something that was a realy fun way to lern how to play the gutar . the problem with most instrmants ore real world activaties is that thay dont have a smooth ore progressive lerning curve. its alot esear to olern something if its fun + its alot esear to find motivatoin to do something id it has a smooth lerning cerv that rewards you at each tern
