Iraq story buried by US networks

You should tell the doctors and scientists at Johns Hopkins why their numbers are wrong. I'm sure they can learn a lot about epidemiology from you and and your intelligent feedback.
Speaking of bullshit numbers, you're supposed to be scared about warm weather and give up what's left of your freedom based on hopelessly inaccurate computer models of weather patterns.
Meanwhile, why don't you libs get a petition together to let the Iraqis know how much you wish they could live under Saddam's and his sons' bootheels again.

There are ethnic mafias going around mass-murdering people and you only want to talk about the small percentage of the casualties that are named in the records?

don't even get me started, dude. Adaptation? handpicked by McKee to play himself?

Any black hole we create in a laboratory will be so small that it evaporates in nanoseconds.

absolutely! unless we're wrong, of course. in which case, we'd never even realize it anyway. much better than if we had been equally wrong about the first nuclear detonation, and torching a hole in our atmosphere.
so, yeah. i'll take that bet. light 'em up.

Here is a report on the Venezuelan Supreme Court's decision regarding RCTV:

Television's role in the coup against Chávez

Saturday May 26, 2007
The Guardian

Dear Sir,

We believe that the decision of the Venezuelan government not to renew the broadcasting licence of RCTV when it expires on May 27 (Chávez silences critical TV station, May 23; Comment and Letters, May 25) is legitimate given that RCTV has used its access to the public airwaves to repeatedly call for the overthrow of the democratically elected government of President Hugo Chávez. RCTV gave vital practical support to the overthrow of Venezuela's elected government in April 2002 in which at least 13 people were killed. In the 47 hours that the coup plotters held power, they overturned much of Venezuela's democratic constitution - closing down the elected national assembly, the supreme court and other state institutions.

RCTV exhorted the public to take to the streets and overthrow the government and also colluded with the coup by deliberately misrepresenting what was taking place, and then conducting a news blackout. Its production manager, Andrés Izarra, who opposed the coup, immediately resigned so as not to become an accomplice.

This is not a case of censorship. In Venezuela more than 90% of the media is privately owned and virulently opposed to the Chávez government. RCTV, far from being silenced, is being allowed to continue broadcasting by satellite and cable. In Venezuela, as in Britain, TV stations must adhere to laws and regulations governing what they can broadcast. Imagine the consequences if the BBC or ITV were found to be part of a coup against the government. Venezuela deserves the same consideration.

Yours,

Tariq Ali

Kid Looses Half His Brain/Skull In Shooting

bamdrew says...

They do hemispherectomies now-a-days (first at Johns Hopkins, now all over) for sever, debilitating epilepsy. Children with frequent life-threatening seizures that don't respond well to medication undergo functional hemispherectomy, where nearly all of one hemisphere is removed, not unlike with this young man.

wikipedia? sure... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hemispherectomy

... and at choggie's comment, I understand the downvote for voyeurism, but I was astounded the first time I heard about the hemispherectomy procedure, and thought this video was similarly astounding ... he literally had much of his brains blown out and is still a high functioning person... if you asked any Joe Nobody on the street if you can live with half a brain they might just say "a'course not!", making this a pretty interesting clip.

Most Under-Reported News Story of 2006 - 655,000 Iraqis Dead

rickegee says...

Here is another site worth checking out that offers a coherent (non-Republican, non-O'Reilly) critique of the Lancet methodology:

http://www.rhul.ac.uk/Economics/Research/conflict-analysis/iraq-mortality/

However, I entirely agree with Prof. Burnham (Lancet Study) when he said the following in the Hopkins article:

"Burnham, who is professor of epidemiology and co-director of Johns Hopkins' Center for Refugee and Disaster Response (CRDR), tried to keep attention focused on what he thought the public needed to understand. "I have one central message," he says. "That central message is that local populations, people caught up in conflict, do badly. This is not a study that says, Ain't it awful. This is a study that says, We need to do something about this."

The Road Taken - Médecins Sans Frontières

Enzoblue says...

Very telling when Ms Hopkins talks about how she was when she broke down. First 2 things she says are "I couldn't eat. I couldn't work". This woman clearly has her priorities set.

Edit: Also, not to sound like a broken record, but this atrocity is all made possible and justified by religion.

The Road Taken - Médecins Sans Frontières

Farhad2000 says...

This film explores motivations, attitudes, and challenges faced by Brett Davis and Mary Ann Hopkins who have joined Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in order to assist people in such disaster-ridden areas as Darfur, Sri Lanka, Burundi, and DRC.

Médecins Sans Frontières is a secular humanitarian-aid non-governmental organization best known for its projects in war-torn regions and developing countries facing endemic disease.

Médecins Sans Frontières was created in 1971 by a small group of French doctors, as an aftermath of the Biafra secession. The organisation is known in most of the world by its French name or simply as MSF, but in the United States the name Doctors Without Borders is often used instead.

MSF is governed by an International Board of Directors located in Geneva, Switzerland, and organised into 20 sections. Annually, about 3,000 doctors, nurses, midwives and logisticians are recruited to run projects, but 1,000 permanently employed staff work to recruit volunteers and handle finances and media relations. Private donors provide about 80% of the organisation's funding, while governmental and corporate donations provide the rest, giving MSF an annual budget of approximately USD 400 million.

The organisation actively provides health care and medical training to populations in more than 70 countries, and frequently insists on political responsibility in conflict zones such as Chechnya and Kosovo. Only once in its history, during the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, has the organisation called for a military intervention.

MSF received the 1999 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of its members' continuous effort to provide medical care in acute crises, as well as raising international awareness of potential humanitarian disasters. Dr. James Orbinski, who was the president of the organisation at the time, accepted the prize on behalf of MSF. Prior to this, MSF also received the 1996 Seoul Peace Prize.
