Daaaaaaaamn! I ain't been "You're the wizard stoned" in AGES!

Every now and then, I get a little misty-eye'd for the days of yore when ultra-high-grade pot wasn't available at every corner store.

I recall the days of lurking narcs in city parks; being out in the middle of a drought; going to a head shop to buy a bong then getting kicked out 'cuz I asked for it wrong (the magic word was "Tobacco", not "pot", you twat!)

The pot was stemmy, the sellers seedy, and I didn't care because I was hella needy.

But once a year, just 'fore November, would come the time I most remember because it was in those shortening days when I'd hear a rumor of Purple Haze, Ghost Train OG -- I'd be stoned for DAYS! Finally, the good stuff came from coastal plots, a plethora of the finest pots; time to dance and restore my stash: shit, I might even score some HASH!

My friends would come by and we'd all get high, never aware of time passing us by. We laughed, we munched, we floated along with hits from the joints and pulls from the bong. We never imagined dabs or wax, we were satisfied with bud: nothing wrong with those facts.

Now I buy an a gram or two -- Dirty Girl; Gorilla Glue -- and satisfied that my wife's in bed, I once again become a Head. I remember all those days gone by when there was no greater goal than just getting high. I recall them fondly -- if somewhat hazy -- and know that life without pot is just a little too crazy.

When Someone Requests A Steve Vai Song

noims says...

Cheers for that. I decided to double my sifting efficiency and watched https://videosift.com/video/Drone-Flight-of-the-Year to that soundtrack... they synched up like Wizard of Oz and Dark Side of the Moon... and I'm not even high! (I started the drone flight after about 50 seconds if you want to try it yourself).

Off to listen to some Joe Satriani now that I'm in the mood for real guitar.

Steve Vai is one of the best instrumentalist guitarists in the world, known for incredibly complex music which would be best defined as 'soaring'.

That this guy got in the ballpark (and actually did a reasonable rendition of the song) is amazing.

Here's a 'performance' (apparently it's guitar synced) of the song so you can hear it.

Terrifying RC Helicopter Breaks Reality

LiquidDrift says...

Oh ya it's totally real. Smarter Every Day did a pretty cool series on helicopter physics that's worth checking out:

There are many pilots that can do the tricks in this video, but Tareq Alsaadi is world class and I haven't seen anyone else do this between trees much less in the dark. He's beyond wizard, into demon territory.

I was going to call 'fake' but his instagram is full of videos like this.

I had no idea that the laws of physics had no grasp on RC choppers.

THE DARK TOWER - Official Trailer

moonsammy says...

I don't know that Carlin's voice would be the right one, but doing so wouldn't necessarily be an issue for the character of Blaine. Seems reasonable to have a computer simulation of a particular voice rather than a voice actor specifically acting out each line. I'd argue however that if we're going to resurrect someone to voice Blaine, let's go with Alan Rickman. Just the right blend of civilized / polite and deadly serious / menacing.

Edit:
I've been a fan of the books from sometime between 3 and 4, and love most of the story. The last three books lost me some, as they felt quite different in tone. Even Wizard and Glass felt a bit of a miss, though it was a solid story in its own right. I frequently avoid watching trailers for films I know I'll see, so as to avoid spoilers and being mislead if the trailer happened to be poorly made. I plan to see this movie, and originally came here for the comments exclusively; having read them, I chose to watch it. I get the impression that the actors treat the characters well, and they feel like good interpretations. McConaughey's Walter is hard to read with what little we see here, but I've generally liked him in other things.

My biggest worry is that visuals all seem too clean, and the more sci-fi direction bothers me some. To me Mid-World always seemed like a character itself. An ancient thing, being stretched thin, fighting to hold itself together and losing. High tech doesn't feel right there, like the extreme entropy would have rendered it all non-operative. There was some tech here and there in the books, but most of it was broken or breaking down.

Blaine is a pain. But if we resurrect George Carlin to voice act him that could be fun.
I'm cautiously optimistic about this, they've clearly taken liberties, but then most of what I have seen could still fit into the lore of the books.

They're all apparently related to the Wicked Witch in the Wizard of Oz.

I found a longer version of the video which elaborates further. It's not really about engineering something useful with actual materials as it is a mathematical wizard theory. Who knows what applications it could have, plenty of things that seemed next to useless suddenly find real world applications years later: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKqt6e7EcCs

10 Points For Gryffindor

It seems logically funny -- Harry Potter is a wizard who sympathizes with Muggles and secretly positioned himself to be a suicide bomber.

Those who support magic are liberals and those Muggles who are anti-magic are right-wing. Harry Potter is portrayed as a right-wing extremist, which is a person who would bomb a magic school. Left-wing extremists, those who support the reverse extreme, would bomb a Muggle school. (Like Magneto's stance against non-mutants.)
