Obama's Term, So Far

Lawdeedaw says...

60 billion on green energy? That's at least one windmill! Of course, he won't make sure that the 60 billion--or any other monies--will go anywhere near what they are intended for. But then congress won't look after it either... Republican or democrat.

After the cuts to favorite companies and CEOs, I could go to McDonald's and get a value meal burger for me and one other... who is with me?

The average household uses 1,000kWh a month. This would require 666 sq ft of solar paneling. There were 105 million households in the US in 2000. This means to supply only the residential needs of the U.S. we would need 70 BILLION square feet of solar paneling every 20 years. Those facile with math will note this is 2,590 square miles...

...Or 1/2 the rooftops of New York, L.A. and Los Vegas.

600 square feet of panels is two 6'x5' panels on a rooftop--that isn't very big. I have some friends that are _completely off the grid_ using this much solar a small windmill. Land space is an invalid argument against solar power.

And it doesn't cost $50,000 per household. My friends, who have no bills for electricity or heating, had their system (including the windmill and battery storage system) installed for just over $10,000 (CDN.) To run powerlines to their house would have cost $15,000, and they would have still had to pay the electric company monthly fees for lights. Yes it was a small loan, but in 5 years that will be paid off, and there will be no more bills, save a little engine oil for the windmill. Whoever is quoting you numbers like $50k per home is misleading you.

It isn't a pipe dream. People are doing it.

How do you know God isn't real?

justathinker says...

Poster here,
I watch this show in it's entirety every Sunday, but I live 3 hours away from Austin so I can't actually watch it on cable. This happened to be a short episode due to studio requirements and so they made it a non-lecture, call-in only program. Most callers are non-theists, and I'd guess most viewers are too. Many of the admirers of the show have asked Matt and other hosts to allow more theists to call in and debate them. Yes sometimes its just the entertainment factor, but I agree that some of the non-theists that call in don't always bring much in the way of new topics to the show. Thank you VideoSift for bringing this program to my attention!

VoodooV, I believe that indeed they are fighting the "good" fight. Many of the theist callers (especially in my opinion the ones that start with "I'm a theist...) are sitting on the fence. The reason Matt continues to do the show are for these people. I'm guessing its rare that anyone is 'unconverted' on the show, but it gets the ball rolling. I think if a theist calls in and wants to debate Matt, he wants to practice defending his position because in his or her own mind he is questioning it.

Atheists are fighting the wrong fight. Why do these people continue to tilt against windmills with people who already have their minds made up and aren't going to swayed no matter how convincing the argument is. All this does is pump up the people who already feel the same way you do. It doesn't improve things one bit. Well except make for good comedy I suppose.

How do you know God isn't real?

The problem I have with this stuff is that very little gets accomplished. The caller will continue being ignorant and the hosts, despite being correct, do nothing to make atheism more acceptable in the public's eyes. It's lose/lose.

There is no debate or discourse in this show, its just two sides yammering at each other. Sure one side has facts and evidence on their side, but this is real life and sometimes facts and evidence don't matter, just ask the OJ Simpson. We do not live in a society where facts and evidence reign supreme, and just shouting over the caller and cutting him off doesn't change that.

In my opinion, the existence of god or the lack thereof is irrelevant. The problem is the role of religion in today's society. The problem is not the deity. The problem are the PEOPLE who claim to know what that deity is all about. Even if Atheists could provide evidence that god does not exist, it just would not matter because it's corrupt religions that cause the problems in society, not god.

I don't care if someone believes in god or not, what matters is whether or not a person is a productive member of society and is helpful to his fellow man, not hurtful. It is PEOPLE, using religion, who have a long history of being hurtful to humanity, they are the threat, not god. For all we know, the caller is a good person who works hard to support his family. I don't care that he believes differently than me or if he isn't good with issues of logic or reason. He's not the problem, god is not the problem, it's the PEOPLE of the preisthood that constantly pressures and manipulates people like that to be intolerant and ignorant.

Ironic that Zappa and the Mothers of Invention would be featured in the accompanying slideshow. Zappa was totally straight, and really hated the fact that Stoners would spoil their experience of his shows by generously imbibing.

Yes... I totally believe someone who named their child "Moon Unit" never touched the stuff.

Alas, it's true. Zappa didn't do the shit.

Now...shouldn't you be out carving wooden shoes or tending to your windmill or something?

"Why Bank Of America Fired Me"

Winstonfield_Pennypacker says...

Usury - thats what it was called many years ago. To lend someone money at interest was considered parasitic and people who engaged in the practice were killed.

Without profits, banks can't function. Without banks, no one can borrow money for homes, cars, educations, etc... If you can't meet the terms of a loan, then don't spend the money (duh). There are banks who are "aggressive lenders", true but it isn't a problem without the second partner in the tango - "stupid borrowers". The onus is on the borrower to have the sense to NOT spend borrowed money they can't afford. Regulations provide a framework with ample consumer protections and information. I don't blame legally operating banks when borrowers exceed their means. Banks aren't your daddy and it isn't their job to control your spending.

Pennypacker, I think you missed the point of this girls story.

I understood quite clearly. She's a fired employee telling a story where she portrays herself as an unfairly treated saint tilting at the windmill of a heartless, evil bank who is twirling its moustache as it gleefully curbstomps weeping grandmothers, orphans, babies, and puppies. I deem her boss & co-workers could tell a much different story...

Even if her story is remotely accurate (very debatable) then the only germaine fact is that she was fired with cause. Everything else is whining about how she wants BoA to run its business. That's not her call. Sister - if you think you have a better business model with less 'evil' then open your own bank. Don't be surprised one day when some fired entry level clerk makes a video talking about YOUR evil business practices though...

It amazes me how people who are so against government tyranny will bend over and take it hard from a corporation.

No corporation has the power to make me do something stupid. When a bank offers a credit card, I don't take it. When a mortgage company asks if I want a re-fi, I say "No thanks!". When I see a sport's car I can't afford I DON'T BUY IT. See how that works? As a result of not being stupid, I have zero debts, a nice home, 2 cars, and money to spend & lend. And guess what? No company has any power over my life. Guess who is the only entity with power to make my life miserable? That's right. Government. Because they can make/change laws, rig the system, and confiscate property. In other words - they can behave tyrannically. Companies can only do that if I give them power by acting stupidly. Government can take that power without my consent.
