The fighting in Afghanistan is much like Vietnam.

Fire bases, and villages. People who are on the soldiers side one day are against them the next day.

Here is combat helmet footage of a British patrol in Afghanistan. You cannot see any combat kills, but at the very end of the video the soldier hops into a trench with a downed target. It's not all glamor and cake.

That's a Village People cover band.

Whether he deserves it or not, that guard is probably going to lose his job over a negligence suit. I'd be surprised if starting the gate and then walking away was acceptable procedure. In fact, I'm surprised it doesn't require someone to stand there and hold a button the entire time.
