Sonoluminescence - A star in a jar!

direpickle says...

Degassed water helps, too.

We did this as an experiment in undergrad. Degassed water, a container with a simple shape (we just had a rectangular prism), a thing to vibrate it, and a thing to control the amplitude/frequency of vibrations. We usually got three or four nodes, depending on how good we were doing.

It was quite a while ago, but I think we had a piece of equipment we used to tell whether we were getting close to a resonance, and then it was just by feel to actually get sonoluminescence to happen. Cuts down on the amount of patience required, but still takes a bit.

Russell Brand blowing your tiny mind on Australia Today

rich_magnet says...

He invokes the special pleading known as "quantum" - the true power, vibration and ultimate knowledge of consciousness, the universe and everything. Whenever I hear that one, I immediately suspect the subject as being full of flim-flam, woo-woo, poppycock and flapdoodle.

Turn Anything Into a Speaker

I first learned of these guys from the ABC show Shark Tank. If I recall correctly no one invested in their company. Good for them. They can keep their millions to themselves.

I am now doubting how well it will work on glass. In all the descriptions, I read "it works on anything," then I see an example list of things like cardboard, cups, boxes, etc., but they never say anything about glass. Though, it would seem to me that glass would be a great conductor of vibrations.

Hood Popping Compilation

littlewoodenboy says...

When I was a child, our family had this happen to our car. We were on vacation driving to a relative's house several states away. The hood latch broke and the hood started to vibrate quickly for about 3 seconds before the safety latch gave way and the whole thing flipped off the car. A car that was behind us ran it over, but luckily their car didn't suffer any damage. I was under the impression for a long time that all hoods would just fly off if they came loose because of that.

Must have been a shallow one

Imagine an 8+ sized.

No thanks ... been in a couple nearing 7.0 that's enough for me =o(

Which ones and where? The biggest and closest was near L.A. of 6.1 IIRC. As a callow, I just left my ant nest with my queen ant and was walking to my school bus pickup spot. I didn't feel it at first until my queen told me to stop and things were shaking. I saw windows were shaking/vibrating and stuff. Scary! My first (earth)quake ever in my life!

A 6.5 and a 6.8 ... both in Seattle. My first experience occurred as I was walking through a park on my way to grade school one spring morning. It struck me as odd that there were no birds to be seen [or heard]. A few minutes later I was standing on the playfield, waiting for school to begin, when I noticed a series of rolling waves in the asphalt heading toward me. Then came a deafening rumble as I watched chimney's collapse off several houses across the street. Two story high windows behind me were bowing in and out as the cleaners fell off the scaffolding. I was barely able to keep my footing. Our school was the only one in the neighborhood that remained open that day. It had been rebuilt after it had been destroyed in a 7.1 shaker back in 1949 [before my time]. Scary stuff indeed!

Wow, I remember seeing/hearing the big quake in Seattle a few years ago. Are/Were you still up there and felt that one?

More than a few years ... I think you are referring to the 6.8 on feb 28, 2001. I was asleep ... it jolted awake. Two of my neighbors lost their chimney's in that one. No damage to my house, just some pictures tilted and the contents of one display shelf were thrown across the room. I shoulda clued in that something was up when my cat wouldn't come in to sleep with me [which was highly unusual]. He ended up running to the basement and would not come out from behind the furnace for three days =o(

Amazing Terminator Arm Man

probie says...

I'm predicting it now. Once these become mainstream, they'll be hacked to:
-give the 'V' sign (or the bird)
-vibrate

All kidding aside, I feel sorry for the guy as he's *really* going to miss it once he has to give it back. I hope he's able to get another one sooner, rather than later.

Water drops floating on water

swedishfriend says...

Oh, I just realized that more contact between the droplet and the larger body of water would through attraction probably lead to coalescence. The vibration probably keeps the droplet and water surface from making enough contact for long enough time to join together. Again, I need to know more about the underlying physics.

Water drops floating on water

swedishfriend says...

I can imagine that a flat surface meeting the curve of the droplet makes for a smaller surface area of contact than if the convex curve of the droplet meets a concave curve of the vibrating water. Maybe the weight of the droplet ensures that it will always be in a concave part of the vibrating surface. I don't know enough about surface tension at an atomic level to really have any good ideas on this.

Water drops floating on water

rbar says...

But why? Why does vibration create larger surface tension (assuming that surface tension is what keeps the bubbles bubbly)? You would expect the opposite.

Oh, now I will not be able to sleep tonight.

Ok, GoPro makes a good commercial - Hero3

rich_magnet says...

It's not just vibration (which is hard to isolate from such a lightweight camera), but a lightweight camera has lots of shake if handheld. The wide lens alleviates much of the apparent effect of the shake, however.

I suspect most of the slow-mo scenes were shot in 1080p60 and time adjusted using Motion or similar to make them seem super-slow. GoPro footage lends itself to this sort of super-slow-mo quite well.
