Nuclear Science Vs. Eminem

eric3579 says...

Look
If you had
One shot
Or one opportunity
To release all the energy you ever wanted
In one moment
Would you abuse it
Or use it for good?

They've armed the weapon
Countdown clock is set and
J. Robert Oppenheimer is sweatin'
Eyes are red and he's nervous
Cause on the surface this is armageddon
The shock bomb, but we're set upon and threatened
And with no sound the whole Alamogordo ground
Is glowing and cowed under one smouldering cloud
He's choked and wowed, everybody's open-mouthed
And over the ground the shock front blows, kapow!
Snap back to the alchemy
Hope before tragedy
Showed with bold math that we broke the whole atom
We choked; controlled action with poles of cold cadmium coat
To go capture neutrons and slow fracture
We broke, postponed that and we chose to go fashion
A most radioactive plutonium gadget then
Fat Man and Boy and Enola goes laughin'
As Nagasaki is blown and Hiroshima's blasted

You gotta choose, yourself how to use it
The knowledge you hold and
Don't ever let a letter go
You only get one shot to stop
And one chance to know
Responsibility comes once you're a science guy, yo!

Neutrons escaping from a source radiating
Merge and start atoms shaking; they begin
To unglue toward a decreased order
Entropic force distorts em
And supercharged with loads of protons they can only go farther
Cold war grows hotter--exothermal--Colorado to Joe Stalin
Coast to coast holes; silos but there's no farmer
Toe-to-toe drama
NATO and Warszawa in co-assured trauma
The globe groans everyone knows there's no calming
So show your foes and implode your core column
Quid pro quo Castle Bravo for Tsar Bomba
And move on and leave atolls exposed to gross doses of old fallout;
Slow-to-go toxins in shoals and so though we explode them no longer
Still the proof lives on in the blue lagoon water, father

You gotta choose, yourself how to use it
The knowledge you hold and
Don't ever let a letter go
You only get one shot to stop
And one chance to know
Responsibility comes once you're a science guy, yo!

When war games hit the stage of a gluon's rage
There's a military boot on the new doc's page
We were playing in the beginning, but grew up strange
Making radar and missiles, and new bombs blazed
And we kept grinding the lensed sights for the next sniper
Best believe son it'll pay to design fighters
All the gains of science analyzed by the
Man provide plans for sarin and cyanide
And our hands are blighted by crying
Eyes when dying lands are slammed if our grants expand the fire brighter
And there's no jury there's no sublime righter
This is our fight
And these minds are all ours so protect your pia mater
Try to feed and water good, seed trust, flee dishonour
Gotta be clean being Apollo stead of Vietnam and
Lay the armour down and be the one to stand up
And lead us on the trail of Spock
We'll elevate these motley progeny
To a future in a safer spot, an irrigated plot
Homicide a way forgot
Success is a lack of military options
Failure's not
Become a lover of a great and cosmic goal
We cannot condone these terror plots
So here we go it's our shot
Feel frail or not
This is the only world and humanity that we got

You gotta choose, yourself how to use it
The knowledge you hold and
Don't ever let a letter go
You only get one shot to stop
And one chance to know
Responsibility comes once you're a science guy, yo!

You gotta make your own mind up, man.

Ariel atom on Nurburgring VS Corvette Z06 600HP

fuzzyundies says...

Actually, if you get the windshield and transparent side-panel options, you'll be mostly fine. I drove a Honda S2000 (and later S2000 CR) for 10 years, and the top was pretty much always down (or off), even in driving rain and light snow. You simply don't get wet at > 30mph, and the occasional stoplight isn't a big deal. Stop and go traffic starts to suck though.

I also got a ride in a 300hp supercharged Atom. It was just around the block but I thought it was going to break my spine with the acceleration, cornering grip and braking distance. I was actually honestly scared.

newtboy said:

I really wish they would make a version with a roof so it could be used in the rain. I'm just nuts enough to want one as a daily driver, but since I live in what's technically a 'rain forest' (one where it's not raining much lately, but that's besides the point) a car with no roof or windows doesn't cut it.

Ariel atom on Nurburgring VS Corvette Z06 600HP

ChaosEngine says...

I've been in an Atom. Not the V8 or even the 300bhp supercharged version. Just the regular 2L version.

And it is TERRIFYINGLY fast. The acceleration is unbelievable. I wasn't driving, but I sat there grinning like an idiot and laughing like a madman the entire time. One of my best experiences ever.

If I ever get suddenly rich, the Atom will be the first thing I buy.

Elon Musk introduces the TESLA ENERGY POWERWALL

BicycleRepairMan says...

"I'm been very impressed with Tesla as a car company, even though I've never driven or even seen one in person"

I can hardly leave the house without seeing one. Often, on the highway, I have a Tesla in front of me, and one behind. They are everywhere here, as there is 1. Lots of people who are well of, and 2.Lots of tax incentives for electric cars, (and other pros like they can use the Taxi lane) and 3. insanely high gas prices. There is also a supercharger 5 mins from my home, and a dealership 15 minutes away, So I guess that helps I want one..

Mad Max: Fury Road

Payback says...

Me, I like my science-fiction when they don't cheat and make up silly stuff like a 'selectable' blower. Anyone who knows even a tiny bit about how a roots supercharger works sees those scenes from TRW and groans. The blades of the impellers need to spin because the carburetor is sitting on top of it. No impellers turning, means no air or fuel passing it, means the engine no worky .

That being said, I could see how a Paxton (basically a belt driven turbo) style supercharger could be set up to work, using an electric clutch from a air conditioning pump and some interesting intake plumbing. Instead of the best of both worlds, it's probably the worst of both.

You'd be better off with a variable boost NO2 system.

Now, don't think that I don't know about the 1920s Mercedes engageable roots superchargers, it's just that the one on the Interceptor in the movie isn't that style, and they merely shot the engine starting up when Max "pulled the switch".

newtboy said:

Also, you don't start your interceptor with the blower engaged, you just don't. The whole point of a 'selectable' blower is you can turn it off both for easier starting and better fuel economy. Come on guys!

Mustang vs Smart car

oritteropo says...

They go a good deal quicker when you replace the engine. The other videos I've seen of drag races with smart cars have replaced the (1.0l ~50kW) stock engine with a (1.3l 120kW) Suzuki Hyabusa engine.

This one had a supercharged 1.5l Toyota 5E-FE engine from a Paseo... and while it would only paseo in the original car, it would at least canter in this one, even without the blower... but with the supercharger it ought to at least match the Hyabusa engine and probably do better.

direpickle said:

Fake. From what I've gathered from seeing the local Smart cars, they have a top speed of 40mph on the highway.

Mustang vs Smart car

oritteropo says...

Yeah, he would've had to back off a bit to get the front wheels down, but breaking the supercharger probably didn't help either. I agree that stabilizers would've helped.. wonder why he didn't have them?.

Sepacore said:

Seems that smart car would win if it had stabilizers on the back. Looked and sounded like it had to let off the throttle to drop the front back down.

It could also potentially be the non supercharged RR "Meteor" version they made for tanks. In fact it's quite likely as they are easier to get hold of these days, Merlins are like rocking horse shit to find now as they are so iconic and sough after (air racers are partly to blame).

Griffons are noticeably longer but it's hard to say without a size reference or a shot of the naked engine. I'm inclined to agree and say no though, if nothing else a good Griffon is probably even harder to find than a Merlin.

Whichever version it's still about the most fking awesome engine ever made! Nothing sounds quite like them, even the top German stuff. Such a shame they can't/won't make them anymore, I'm sure there's a big market .

Merlin, right? Looks too small to be a Griffon...

VW Golf GTI MK7 review

EvilDeathBee says...

Isn't FSI simply the 2.5 fuel injected engine?
They might be bringing the superior 1.4 TSI engine to replace the standard 2.5 here (same power and torque but torque peaks at a wider and lower range. And it'd be more fuel efficient. Plus the supercharger and turbocharger sounds bring out the kid in me).

I'd been thinking about the TDI, but for the cost you can get a better equipped petrol engine version. I don't believe I drive enough (not on these quebec roads) to warrant a diesel engine for me

xxovercastxx said:

I believe the Golf Mk7 is all FSI and TDI, yes.

The 2.0 TDI has made the 2.5 obsolete. The TDI has an 81 ft-lb torque advantage, a weight advantage, and gets about +10mpg.

I picked up a JSW TDI 2 months ago and, while it's not quite as flashy as a GTI, it's a damn nice drive. It's my second TDI in a row and I don't see any reason to go back to gasoline any time soon.

Racing. Not posing.

braschlosan says...

Give me a 914 with a Subaru motor or a 944 and I'd flog it all day long.

If I was gonna get something with snap oversteer I'd get a 1989 SuperCharged MR2 (mostly for the body style)

Hey braschlosan, you'd prob'ly be a believer if you hopped in a boxster for day or two..

How Turbo-Charger's are made

AeroMechanical says...

Nitpicking a bit, 'supercharger' is a more general term for the device responsible for forced-induction, and 'turbocharger' is the specific case where the supercharger is driven by exhaust gasses. So a turbocharger is a type of supercharger.

How Turbo-Charger's are made

jonny says...

A supercharger is driven directly by the motor, whereas a turbocharger is driven by exhaust gases. So yes, a turbo requires higher revs to produce enough exhaust gas to spin the turbine - thus "boost lag".

EvilDeathBee said:

What's the difference between a turbocharger and a supercharger? Isn't it something like that the supercharger boosts power at lower revs, while a Turbo requires higher revs?

In Australia we have the Euro spec VW's, and my Golf had a 4 cylinder 1.4 litre engine with a turbocharger and a supercharger putting out 118 kilowatts (around 160 hp). Here in North America they have that 5 cylinder, 2.5 litre engine that produces 170 hp. Only 10 hp difference between a 1.4 and 2.5 litres!

How a Turbocharger Works

coolhund says...

Not quite right. In normal operation a turbo charger saves fuel, but under wide open throttle and general fast driving conditions, it uses much more fuel than NA engines with similar power.

Also a supercharger works similar, but its not propelled by exhaust gases, but directly by the engines crank shaft (over a belt).
