Most feminists I've seen don't argue that men and women are the same, but that women should be treated more equally in areas of freedom of control of their own bodies. How much they get paid for doing the same amount of work as a man. Or, shockingly, how rapes should be dealt with such as not ignoring them.

Maybe they've been busy researching OTHER things, medical science has advanced a crazy amount in our lifetimes, in just the past 10 years it's leaped forward. There's many avenues that we can study, only so much funding that can be made available for those studies. It's not shocking in that environment of a constantly growing field that some areas would be neglected. It's not necessarily because of Feminism and to claim that without a lot of evidence is just ignorant.

I would like to introduce you to the Streetlight Effect. Science has to jump forward before we can even begin to ask the right questions to get the answers we really seek. It's even more restricted when you think of what funding you have available to spend money on.

60 Minutes here has created a topic of discussion they have not made a compelling argument that can be taken seriously. Which makes sense, this is a television show and it requires concision and isn't going to spend the full time on this subject. I think it does a disservice though to take this blurb and not add to it, instead cite it as a source of proof and not add your own evidence to further the argument. This is limp ammo for ignorant people to use, this is a conversation starter, not a "head shot" that you want it to be.

I mean it should've been fucking obvious when they use feminist speeches clips from the 60s to try to make their point that Feminism has held back research.

As a kid, I was really into astronomy, but was always bugged by the fact that books would talk about seeing the Milky Way at night, and about the thousands of stars in the night sky. I figured there was something wrong with my eyes or something, because I could never find the Milky Way, and while I never counted the stars, I thought there were only about a hundred at best.

Then when I was about 12, we went camping and on a night with a new moon, I went outside the tent after dark. I looked up at the sky and literally got dizzy at the stunning revelation that was the real night sky.

Nowadays, I always try to plan family camping trips around the new moon so my kids get a chance to see the real sky, but even out in the middle of nowhere it is getting increasingly difficult to find a spot without at least one glaring streetlight or security light.

News stories said they could hear traffic and see streetlights, but couldn't figure out how to get to them. Seems like a serious lack of imagination -- When in danger or in doubt, cheat. I can't see why they couldn't just walk straight, possibly knocking over some of the corn stalks.

Smartphone: under 20 watts
Laptop: ~50 watts
Desktop: ~500 watts
Car: ~50,000 watts (with 100% efficiency & 67 horsepower output) e.g. cruising down the highway at 75mph with total drag forces of 1491 newtons (~330 pounds). Not to mention the millions of 100-watt-ish streetlights every few meters.

Cruising around in your car is adversely impacting the environment waaaaaaay more than surfing the net, minute for minute.

If you look at most freeways, they gradually slope across the surface for water drainage. So no they are not perfectly flat, but the goal for people preparing subgrades is to make the surface as even as possible while maintaining the desired grade. If the surface is really even, that means there will be the minimum amount of overage on materials when it comes to asphalt. If they prepare it properly, the machine can be set at 2-3-4 inches thick and lay all day at that depth, and when they move over to the next lane, they can lay the same thickness and maintain the grade without having to adjust. That's the goal, it meets the specs of the job and doesn't cost them in overages on material....and if they are majorly over...someone screwed up.

Now....I'm pointing out flaws in this roadway because if they were to use his design and it failed miserably there would be less chance of them ever doing it again. So what's the fault in putting it in applications where it would see more extreme conditions in a lower traffic zone to get a proof of concept? Or hell even put it on a bike path or sidewalk, if it holds up superbly for a few years......move onto a military base to see how well it holds up to extreme abuse of their heavy machinery.

Just slapping it down on a highway because that would be cool is a sure fire way to kill this prospect dead in it's tracks for a long time to come. Prove it lasts, prove it provides savings, and prove it's as safe as or better than current materials under all possible road conditions. Highways may be the goal, but it isn't the first step on an unproven concept.

Personally I think if they did this on bike paths, they'd have more luck pushing it forward..because bike paths are all about the green initiative...so if they can also kick some energy savings back to the city while testing their product. No one loses there if the materials work, and if they don't.....at least it's just a bike path that needs re-surfaced.

You could also have dynamic road deployment and redeployment. Need to rewire your entire highways system for an evacuation? No problem, reconfigure all signage and postings to make all available roads outgoing only, now, short of the likely bottlenecks, you have doubled your outbound traffic ability. Really, the sky is the limit. Any level of smartness to the roads brings with in untold innovation. The physical problems seem very manageable and knowable, but the benefits are easily hidden and largely unrealized. The potential is mind blowing though. Solar powered streets and buildings just makes to much since not to try and make work. So much free energy in these already used places, we just need the means to effectively harvest it, and this seems like a great idea, in any final form it takes. It is worth mentioning that glass is non-crystalline. Meaning it can flex and bend over time. Look at any old house and the windows are thicker on the bottom then the top. So it can deal with gradual gradient changes, how well is a matter of engineering.

I saw a woodpecker do this on a streetlight near my house during easter. I suspect they just like the sound; maybe they use pecking to signal territory ownership like other birds use song?
