D30 orange putty absorbs shocks instantly by turning solid

Sniper007 says...

It's cool for certain impacts and such... but they actually used it in a BOOT. Do you realize how STUPID that is? This material (3do) does not protect AT ALL against CRUSHING. If you drop a 50+ pound block on your foot, it's going to get crushed unless two things occur:

1) The block is traveling at a high speed, and
2) IMMEDIATELY after impact, the block is picked up or deflected.

I have steel toe boots, and I actually use the steel toes as a tool. I set heavy objects on them, so they are not flush with the floor. This allows you to get your fingers under the object to lift once you are in position. 3do would squish like jelly in this scenario, and most scenarios I can think of involving foot protection.

Further, the Least Harm Principle suggests that living a vegan lifestyle actually kills more animals than if we subsisted strictly on ruminant animals. So I think I'll stick with beef

Skeeve, I just read a quick summary of LHP and it has some pretty obvious holes in it:

- It counts exposing rodents to predators (when crops are harvested) as "killing" them. Obviously, predators would be eating rodents anyway. A loss to mice is a gain to buzzards.

- It bases deaths of wild animals caused by agriculture on decline in numbers compared to before the area is farmed. This is pretty flawed, since animal numbers would plummet when the land was claimed but level out afterwards. Some of the animals would move nearby and some would cut down on reproduction rather than dying in some great massacre.

- It goes by pure numbers, counting a fieldmouse the same as a cow. Now I don't want to see mice getting squished, but an animal with a pinhead brain does not have the same capacity to suffer as a large grazing animal like a cow or a pig. Otherwise you might as well count aphids in the death toll. (I appreciate that this was countering a hard-line vegan argument, so I suppose the equal treatment is valid in that particular context).

- It lists pesticides as a cause of death, but seemingly ignores the possibilities of organic farming. When was the last time you met a vegan that was keen on pesticides?

Sorry, that was really preachy. I'm kind of riled up because I'm lacto-ovo vegetarian and therefore indirectly responsible for those chicks getting minced. Not a nice feeling.

P.s. Props to Throbbin. I have a great deal of respect for people who have killed for their meat. If everyone had to slaughter an animal before they could buy KFC there might only be a small increase in vegetarianism, but at least there would be a large decrease in hypocrisy.

Version 4.0 Issues (Sift Talk Post)

I'm not familiar with FlashBlock, but I guess you should try disabling it for videosift.

>> ^ant:
As for FlashBlock, it is a popular extension for Mozilla's web browsers. Basically, it shows a "F" icon in Flash areas and requires user to click on it to play the Flash area. Very handy! On VS, when I click on "F" icon, embedded videos do not show up at all. I did whitelist for VS, but then all videos are loaded and sometimes I wait too long and YouTube says video doesn't exist. I load all new unwatched VS videos in tabs to watch later.

The FlashBlock problem started after the 4.0 release. I mean that after 4.0 was released, Flashbock was working fine on video pages, then sometime in the last few hours it stopped working. Maybe it was something you changed while fixing other stuff.

Also, layout of this page is all screwy now. The main column is extra wide, and the right column is squished into about one inch. Actually, it's not really squished so much as truncated.

Ladybugs Infestation - Invasion Covers Home And Trees

AeroMechanical says...

Are we sure those are actually ladybugs? We get huge numbers of beetles that look like ladybugs, but are actually some sort of related beetle from Asia. I mean, *lots* of them, but not that many of course. I was once sucking them up with a vacuum cleaner and counting as I went and I ended up with over two-hundred after only a few minutes and I was still just working the one bay window. Legend has it that if you see that many in your room, inside the walls they're swarming.

When you squish them they leave some sort of stain and a foul odor and I've heard they bite though I've never actually been bitten. The most annoying thing is that because there are so many, they're all half dead and they fly drunkenly around the room running into things. It's actually a little amusing when the ceiling fan is running, but those things would probably put your eye out at such velocities.

Still, if you're going to be infested with bugs, it could be worse. At least they aren't earwigs or cockroaches or something gross looking like that. Still, an invasive species reproducing so prodigiously has to be screwing up some ecological balance or other.

The PROPER way to peel a banana

MaxWilder says...

You're very lucky if you never have trouble opening a banana, spoco2. If the banana isn't perfectly ripe, the top doesn't always snap open. I sometimes squish the whole top eigth trying to wrestle with the damn things. There are times when I eat a banana a day, and I can't wait to try this technique on the organic ones I buy.

Couch Airbag Explosion Surprise

You can almost hear those vertebrae squishing together. That guy may be thinking of this incident everytime he has to bend to pick something up for the rest of his life, once you mess your back up, it stays that way.

Cop Pushes Woman Down Stairs

csnel3 says...

Its a known fact, pushing people down stairs is not a good safety practice. You would have to be in a mental state or , just really be an asshole to push someone down the stairs.

If someone in front of you stops on the stairs, Do not push them down the stairs!

I grew up near stairs, I know that there are known guidlines:)

Also don't put things on stairs, A person coming down the stairs may not see it.

Don't put flammable stuff under stairs, cause if it flames, then the people upstairs are in trouble.

The doors at the bottom of the stairs should open outward, that way if a bunch of people come down the stairs in a hurry, the people in front don't get squished.

Watch the kids or elderly or anybody!! Especially anyone that you have been entrusted to safeguard, when they are near stairs, take extra precautions, like a safety gate or help them with a gentle hand.

In other words I think that prick pushed someone down the stairs. That is a failure for a "Public Safety Officer". Fire him!!

That ends my PSA.

Streamline the Sift (Sift Talk Post)

xxovercastxx says...

There's no reason *invocations have to go if buttons are added but I'm pretty indifferent on this suggestion.

I do think it would be nice to squish siftbot's comments, like so.

Get rid of all that extra cruft that takes up so much vertical space. The majority of it isn't even of any use (voting, comment history, quote, profile reply, spam, ignore) on siftbot.

So I got my bobbie job, want to see?

Huge hole in the water!
