DOOM - E3 2015 Gameplay Trailer

ChaosEngine says...

Ahh yes, painkiller.. the game with a gun that shoots shurikens and lightning... that could only be more awesome if had tits and was on fire!!

thanks, Yahtzee!

Agree about the atmosphere but I think Serious Sam was more fun for me anyway.

I think Painkiller actually followed in Doom's footsteps more closely in terms of atmosphere. And there was no shortage of things to shoot at in Painkiller either.
That said, I doubt I'll ever forget the first time I heard the distant screams of headless bombers.

DOOM - E3 2015 Gameplay Trailer

I know what you mean.

Too slow, scripted executions (that repeated almost instantly), it just doesn't feel like Doom.

Serious Sam has already done a far better version of modern Doom anyway.

I am entirely unenthused about this. Watching the actual gameplay footage made me yawn, which is heartbreaking.

Wolfenstein The New Order

Asmo says...

Sry, how is that a bad thing?

Doom/Wolfenstein/Serious Sam etc, all guns, no depth, tonnes of fucking fun...

Depth can be vastly overrated, particularly when you're trying to stitch it on to something that glories in you getting your bad on and crushing the Nazi scourge in to paste. It doesn't need depth.

Looks like something I could have come up with when I was 15. All guns, no depth.

I Bet you Can't Guess what this is Going to be...

Fletch says...

A dildo! A bong! No, wait... a squid! Oh, I see, it's a person. The Heat Miser! No, Elvis! I know... it's Lincoln! Yep, there's his beard, alrighty. Wait a sec... that ain't Lincoln. Hmmm... Chuck Norris? Wait, what the hell is that thing? A bunny? One of those headless dudes from Serious Sam? What is he wrapping... around... Sumo wrestler! Headless Sumo wrestler! He's leaning against a cactus! Nope, he's TIED to the cactus for some reason. Now he's... I have no idea what that is, but it looks like it would make a cool lamp.

Zero Punctuation: Top 5 of 2011

Nebosuke says...

Interesting that Driver made it on the good list... probably doesn't mean the Wii version though. I have to agree with MW3/BF3. I am really over "realistic shooters". Give me more Serious Sam and Portal.

Serious Sam 3: BFE Launch Trailer

jmzero says...

Serious Sam was a good game. Serious Sam 2 was a horribad impression of some other game. With number 3, it looks like at least they've figured out what was good about the original (ie. a million enemies, and shooting them) and are bringing the good gameplay ideas back.

But the writing needs serious help. It's funny; they owe much of their success to good comedy writing. Not in their game, but by Eric Wolpaw, who wrote about it on OldManMurray. Eric would later go on to write for Portal, and help create probably the best games of the last decade.

Do you think Valve regrets hiring Eric? And yet, other game companies haven't figured this out. If you want to do comedy in a game, hire someone who's proven successful at doing comedy.

The one-liners in this video are sad crap. Yes, I understand that they're supposed to be over-the-top. That's the problem: they aren't, and they aren't funny.

Without any digging, you can see Wolpaw had plenty of contemporaries that are still around, still being funny, and still available for hire. Seanbaby is slumming it at Cracked. Lowtax has to be bored over at SomethingAwful. Hell, there are tons of great writers at SA who'd be great for a comedy video game. I don't think it would take crazy money to get Yahtzee (or one of the other current generation) doing game writing either.

Why aren't they being picked up by someone? How do you still get crap like this in a high budget title?

John Carmack of Id answers more questions

budzos says...

Yeah, Doom and Quake are sort of their own thing. They are being updated as other games. Doom is still around in the form of Serious Sam and Painkiller. Quake multiplayer is around... currently I play TF2 for the kind of fix I used to get from Quake I/II/III.

And I'm playing BFBC2 at 2560x1600 right now... I task-switched out because I'm so ADD lately. 4XMSAA still helps improve the image a bit if you look close. I could probably turn it up more but yeah it's just not necessary beyond a certain point.

All Your History: id Software Part 5: Silent Decade (S3E11)

shagen454 says...

The last decade for id was definitely lacking. I'm looking forward to them releasing something that is somewhat good. RAGE looks pretty awesome and teaming up with Zenimax seems like a pretty good idea. I bought DOOM 3 right when it came out and it creeped me out initially; in the end I thought it was a pretty shallow game. I bet it'd be more fun to play now that not many people are releasing 3D shooters that aren't tactical - or completely brain-dead Call of Duty ripoffs.

Doom had a great thing going back in the day - you'd have to kill waves and waves of monsters but you'd be working your way towards an arch-vile or some other powerful nasty ; there actually was an objective to the mindless slaughter. Serious Sam had it down in a goofy way.

It's strange to think that out of all the great developers of my time (late eighties, early nineties) that the only developer still around that I play games from is Blizzard. How the hell have they pulled it off?! Back then my money would have been on Origin, Black Isle and id for future success. Black Isle released some of my favorite games ever but I really do miss Origin.

Never saw Blizzard being the company that would become a beacon of creativity & polish that would make oodles upon oodles of money.
