Ten Hours of Princess Leia Walking in NYC

Furious 7 - Official and Officially Awesome Trailer

lucky760 says...

@gorillaman @ChaosEngine

Fast & Furious (which is part 4) was the first step in the right direction as the first in the series to start a transition, although only marginally, out of a fun-but-really-stupid category of action flick. Tokyo Drift was definitely the worst of them. (I'm just hoping the tie-in with part 7 and the return of Lucas Black will somehow make up for its existence; introducing us to Han's back story in Fast Five helped.)

Fast Five was the first good flick on its upswing toward world domination because it was much less dumb, but had a much richer story, better characters, incredible practical effects, a huge, diverse cast, and awesome international settings. This was the first time it was much more kick-ass than pure roll-your-eyes-and-sigh maximum-dumb-shitatude accompanying the action.

Fast & Furious 6 continued to prove they were onto a winning formula and continued that trend. (However, there's a fucking-stupid ~9 minute fight on an airplane WHILE it is driving at near-takeoff speeds on a runway. I did some calculations the last time I watched it and remember thinking they had to be on like a 20-mile-long runway. Come on guys, it's called editing; or at least have some phony excuse for that bullshitestry. But I digress.)

One of the most compelling parts of both parts 5 and 6 were some kick-ass (though of course impossible) practical stunt sequences that may have been the first I've seen as a fully-grown man to earn me a visceral ear-to-ear grin and cause me to unintentionally, audibly say "Holy shit!" in the movie theater.

Can't wait for part 7 and I hope they are able to just keep churning them out, despite the unfortunate loss of Paul Walker because these are some seriously ass-kicking action flicks.

I'll try. The ghosts are Tracy Ullman Show
First at the door looks CGI claymation, then Anime, the third looks like Bob's Burgers.
I totally don't get the next ones, they look like Weebles.
Then in the background is Mr. and Mrs. Smith.
Next is the French cartoonist (I can't recall his name).
Then Lego.
Then Despicable Me.
And finally animal Simpsons.
I'm thinking these are all from opening sequences.

Anyone know who all the different characters are? I only know two of them.

Yeah, that sequence was pretty original and awesome...
I think the same character is appearing in an upcoming Marvel movie but under a different name due to licensing issues. It will be interesting to see what they do with the character.

TSA: please verify that your used cane is not a sword

bremnet says...

I am often befuddled by the logic of what's allowed and what's not, and the seemingly arbitrary choice of same by different TSA employees... The cane that Ms. Robotcow is holding in the opening sequence looks like it might be able to inflict some serious damage by anyone skilled in the art of baseball. On a flight to Canada three weeks ago, we were not allowed to carry on a short (fits in the measuring device) 4 piece fishing rod with spinning reel attached, in a soft sided, zippered travel bag. Seemed they thought it could be weaponized. Thankfully, our driver was close enough to retrieve the offending package and take it back home. Oddly, on the return to USA, my fingernail clippers were confiscated as they had a fold out file - these were just good old Walgreen's, have carried them for 7 years and approx. 100 flights. I could do more damage with a key, a pen, a plastic knife or a wooden pencil. I also carry a beautiful blue machined aluminum pen/kubaton from Smith & Wesson, which is pointy, but hey, it's just a pen. I do give the TSA high marks for consistency in the application of inconsistent policies. Well done everybody.

Top 10 Most Effective Movie Editing Moments of All Time

Nice list, but not enough said about the individual sequences. I was hoping to understand better what good editing is. I'm still not clear.

"Weird Al" Yankovic - Polka Face

In tribute to the new album, let's *promote this ridiculous mashup with a dose of *Canada in the robot sequence.

And I guess the Polka is a *dance ...

Who knew metal milling machine could be such fun?

Fransky says...

What I find fascinating is how much thought and programming-fu that went on before the mill was even turned on. To break that complex operation down into a sequence and then write the code for it is mind blowing

James Bond (007) Gunbarrel Sequences (1962-2012)

sixshot says...

I'm a fan of the ol' James Bond theme melody... and some of those renditions are horrible. And majority of the gun barrel sequence are pretty standard fare stuff. But there are a few that are terrible.

You might be right! I watched the sequence at 35-40 secs and decided that in comparison to the explosion at 3:13, the 3:13 explosion looked like they'd stumbled into something (bigger, blacker, flames)---but maybe that was just the tree line?

grinter said:

I don't see the "secondary explosions". I do see some trees being blown up.

Can You Solve This? - Veritasium

MilkmanDan says...

His wording is chosen carefully ... "rule" instead of "pattern", etc. but still the way that he poses the initial setup and his sample sequence are very leading. Not at all surprised at the initial attempts he gets.

I would have said "16 32 64" first, and "3 9 27" next. Those both would be leading me further down the trap of thinking in terms of a sequence/pattern rather than just a 'rule'. In computer science it is actually important to test how an algorithm reacts to being fed just bizarre, off the wall inputs -- but you're going to test "sane" stuff first. Human nature.

JustSaying says...

"Recently featured as a Vimeo staff pick, this short from Marco-Antoine Locatelli is a beautiful, black-and-white sequence that showcases a dancer "interacting" with animated light."

Um, nope. Not a lightsource he's interacting with, just an animation of geometric forms. Too bad.

Our RoboCop Remake - Trailer

spawnflagger says...

I just watched the full movie. It was amazing (in a so-bad-its-good purposeful way).
SPOILERS!
I don't think the other Robocop remake has a scene where he's shooting 15 dicks off... choreographed dance murder sequence was bravo as well. Then the obligatory "80's coke party" with cocaine and boobs. And at least 2 references to That 70's Show, cause the bad guy is the dad.

Just organizing 55 different film crews is a crowd-sourcing accomplishment.
