Racism in UK -- Rapper Akala

Barbar says...

The UK has done a much better job in handling the situation than the US has, it seems, though it has had more time to do so than the southern US. I don't think they achieved it by implementing systemic racism in the opposite direction, though. And let's be clear, even though we may feel justified in kicking out higher achieving students to replace them with a quota-satisfying minority group, that is systemically racist, the very thing we are trying to abolish. It is a clear example of committing a wrong to hopefully achieve a right. And it will never feel like anything short of racism to the individual student that gets short changed.

So let's say that it works, and black folk begin to integrate more successfully into the encompassing community, and the encompassing communities don't end up resenting them for the racist laws that are helping them to do s . Will we ever be remove these racist rules? Or will we be arguing about an ever small statistical deviation somewhere? Furthermore, all of the people that are unjustly damaged by these new racist rules (ie. Ashley), won't they then be due reparations in the future too? Who would pay those? Where would it end? Would it end?

I just doubt that more racism is the cure for racism.

Well we seem to be devolving into miscommunication, so let's all be clear! bareboards2, I was not singling you out at all. In fact, you have by and large been the image of civility, so much so that I picture you with a monocle while writing your missives to us.

I too think that MonkeySpank (god help us all) seems to have the most historical and accurate interpretation of the situation; one does not traumatize a people, be they Jews or African Americans for decades and decades and decades and then expect them to up and happily integrate. There's a reckoning that has to happen, and I am sorry if your lilly white ass didn't personally own slaves, you were born into a societal architecture created by those who did and you can't pretend the playing field is level. You can stare at your voting right's act, you can belly ache about how Ashley with her 3.5 didn't get into U State university while a minority did, but it doesn't change the fact that that there's a lot of redress to be done, and it'll take a LONG time to remedy. We have some signs of improvement, with prominent African American politicians and intellectuals taking the stage and garnering universal respect, but that's the tip of the iceberg, and we have a LONG way to go.

Woman almost hits biker by merging, gets caught by cops

newtboy says...

For those who consider the biker's actions excessively aggressive in some way, I offer the story of my father's actual excessively aggressive reaction to the same vehicular slight.
In the 70's, my dad drove a Lincoln Continental....not just a boat but a cruise ship and tank of a car. He also drank heavily and thought nothing of driving drunk...which likely explains (but does not excuse) his actions in this story.

Driving in Houston one night, at a merge a woman refused to let him in when it was his turn. This enraged him, so he followed her for miles until she stopped at a red light. He then crept up to her bumper and shoved her car into the middle of the busy intersection, stalling her car and leaving her panicked. Satisfied with his revenge, he just turned right and left. THAT is what I consider overly aggressive. I thought the biker here was incredibly restrained and handled the situation perfectly.

Ken Burns slams Trump in Stanford Commencement

harlequinn says...

He's a billionaire. Traditionally speaking society at large accepts that people with incredible wealth are powerful.

If he's elected then by definition no force is needed and he doesn't need to try and seize the reigns. He's the president. He has a lot of parliamentary power. The reigns are handed to him on a silver platter. That said, he's still got congress to deal with, and if it's a hostile congress then he could be pushing shit up a hill.

Thank you for your fascism elucidation. I disagree that system will happen if he is elected. It's almost fanciful.

I don't believe Clinton has been charged or convicted. That's why I said she's "innocent until proven guilty".

No, not satisfied. I'd need to see links to court outcomes. But I'm not that interested so don't bother on my behalf.

As per the Oxford Dictionary the common use of naive is: showing a lack of experience, wisdom, or judgement. http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/naive

True, no one KNOWS, but it's a no brainer that his election would be seen as unpredictable by the markets, and dire political unpredictability=bear market.

Not so in any way. He has so little actual power it's laughable that you would think that. He's not even allowed to run the companies he actually owns large parts of because the boards won't allow him to, because they have a duty to not let him drive the companies into the ground. What "power" do you think he has?

He probably can't "seize the reigns" by force unless he's elected. He can attempt to seize them if he is elected.

Facism-(sometimes initial capital letter) a governmental system led by a dictator having complete power, forcibly suppressing opposition and criticism, and emphasizing an aggressive nationalism and often racism.

Has Clinton been convicted? You didn't even say "likely broken Federal law", you said "on more occasions than is accountable, broken Federal Law" Because his past has not been as transparent by far and usually those dealing with him are forced to sign non disclosure agreements, it's patently ridiculous to imply that his crimes would be simple to just point to....but OK, not paying off on interstate contracts is a federal crime, one he's admitted publicly that he's committed uncountable times, any time he gets service before payment in full it seems....and he's been found guilty of that in civil court. Satisfied?

Um...lacking knowledge is being naïve.

We can only imagine what will happen. Nobody knows.

He is already one of the most powerful men in the world.

He can't seize the reigns. He can only be voted in. I.e., the reigns will be handed to him freely given by democratic vote.

Fascist means such a lot of things nowadays that it is an easy catchall insult. You'll have to elucidate exactly what you mean. Totalitarian? Despot? Anti-democratic? Etc, etc. the list is so long. It's a useless word when it means so many different things. You might as well say "smurf".

"Demagogue". Lol. Yes, he seems pretty good at it too.

Likely is not the same as has. He either has or he hasn't broken as many or more federal laws. And if he has you'd be able to point out the investigations, convictions or some other irrefutably damning evidence. And, just like Clinton, he's innocent until proven guilty.

You forgot an option at the end of your diatribe against Trump. 4) Lacking knowledge of said allegations. Which is not the same as naive.

Toph is Blind

moonsammy says...

Such a good series. Episodic cartoons are fine and all, but I loved that Avatar presented a well-planned, multi-season story arc that actually had a satisfying resolution. Shows, animated or live action, rarely seem to have a decent ending, but both Avatar and Korra nailed it in my opinion. If you've written it off as a show for kids and not watched it, do yourself a favor and get to it. If you need an excuse, find / borrow / steal a kid or two first (but really, no excuse should be needed).

If Meat Eaters Acted Like Vegans

transmorpher says...

We were talking about the fall of civilization, so you've kind of quoted me out of context there. In that case let me say that *almost* nobody on this planet lives in that situation.

If you think vegans are doing it for anything other than the animals and environment you're just projecting your insecurities at the issue to help satisfy your cognitive dissonance.

You're just nit-picking to avoid the true issue, whether intentionally or subconsciously.

Like I said before, I wasn't always vegan, so I know what's going on, I've said those exact same things you have. Until one day something clicked, and I realised I was wrong.

I think the issue really is that people don't truly understand veganism, because if they did they would be vegan.

newtboy said:

Wow. You really are speaking with authority on a subject you are ignorant about, aren't you? Look up Masai, or Inuit. Both survive on a meat only (or almost only) diet out of necessity. So much for "nobody on this planet is currently in that situation, probably never will" [be].

You are not superior. You are narcissistic. It seems that's a side effect of being vegan...you ALL have this false sense of superiority. That alone is enough reason to keep eating meat.

When people have no sense of humor about their own ideals, it's proof positive that they are insecure in them.

Vegans are not diverse when it comes to doing their little superior dance. They all do it, then all go pat themselves on the back for being a vegan douche to some 'evil carnivore' (by which they mean omnivore).

BTW, chimps are OMNIVORE, not carnivore....you know, that THIRD category of eaters that nearly all animals fall into, but which vegans choose to ignore.

BS, vegans are like ex addicts, always trying to make their bean curd taste and feel like meat. They fail miserably, but they continue to try and try....because meat tastes good and they miss it. You find the THOUGHT of meat revolting, but you still LOVE the taste.

Why You Should NEVER Fly American Airlines

bcglorf says...

Here's probably the real reason Cenk got booted, a clip of him shouting down the staff as one of the other customers in line is trying tell Cenk to back off.

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x43at5z

I find this unsurprising on all levels. The airlines care about profits, and the passengers are just cargo to them so the shoddy situation isn't uncommon. Also, Cenk always seems to have this entitled and enraged attitude in ever video I see him in, so him going ballistic at everyone is unsurprising. Him getting booted from the flight is not surprising, but given how little I think of Cenk's behaviour, it's oddly satisfying,

I really don't like this guy's attitude. You can't just demand another plane show up, they snap their fingers, and it happens. It takes time, and this prick thinks his mob mentality was helping the situation.

Why Electronic Voting is a BAD Idea

Spacedog79 says...

I stood as a candidate in the 2015 UK General Election and have to say seeing the process from the inside was quite impressive. We got to monitor the count and have teams making our own tallies of votes as the paper ballots were being counted by looking over the counter's shoulders. We could then predict how each candidate was doing from our sample and verify that the final result fell within our predictions. In all I came away very satisfied that the final tally was indeed a true reflection of the voter's intention.

A good tip if you want to voice your frustrations at the candidates: Just write it down on your ballot paper. It will likely spoil your ballot, but everything you write will be read carefully by the returning officer and all of the candidates to see if everyone agrees it constitutes a valid vote. If you clearly voted for a candidate and didn't write anything that could be personally identifiable it may still be counted as valid anyway.

I didn't win by the way, but did pretty well.
